Maui----->Portland

Ok, so I'm moving back to portland for 3 months to save money, Maui is getting pretty expensive for me. So how is life on Maui? I was thinking of moving to Haiku or Paia. I hear it's expensive but 1000 for a cottage on a nice island sounds pretty nice. How is the rest of the living? I hear gasoline is 3.50$.
