I'm starting to realize that for the amount of time I've been doing this, my work doesn't look nearly as good as it should.
I've never taken a class, and there are NO blowers around here for me to kick it with/watch.
How much benefit do you all get from the various classes you take? I know it depends on the teacher/venue/student, but do you just get new ideas, or do you feel like there's a "jump" in your work after a good class?
I know this may be a nonsensical question, sorry, I've had a crappy couple of weeks, major slump:bangHead:

It's invaluable.
classes are awesome. first of all it's super fun to hang with other lampers and make new connections. also every class i've taken has brought my work to a higher level. partly because of the excitement the class generated in me. partly because you have somebody who has mastered some aspect of glass spending their time and energy on making your work improve. of the classes i've taken i would say that mickelson was the most fun and informative. his knowledge is wide ranging and right on point for ambitious pipers. also he has mad respect for the work we all do which feels good coming from somebody of his stature.
seriously, go for it.

Yeah theres nothing like a good class to get you out of a slump. There is a marcel j lee class at the end of the month.look it up under the events category. that would probably blow you into a new dimension of glass

Classes are a great oppertunity to learn new things, perfect other things and network with our peers. If you have never taken a class before let me be the first to offer you 10% off any workshop at my school. www.revereglass.com

arent you in the bay area chris?? check out the revere scheduale, as far as ive seen it it seems to be off the hook, oh, and a jlee marcel class!!! i would give my left....nostril....
classes or lessons will definetly shave some time off any learning curve, thats how i see it!
good luck man
do it man! at least you don't have to go too far to get some instruction. conferences are cool too . I think there is supposed to be a big one at some college in in so. cal later this month.
Classes jumped my work to the next level. A new tech, a new way to look at glass, touch up your skills, Meet other glassblowers - totally worth it.
With your location in Monterey your really close to Berkeley. If your gonna take a class You should check out Revere Glass Academy. Dustin Has some world class people coming in there.

I've been to 2 classes. A "tubing fundamental" class with Barry Lafler (THE MAN!) and a stemware class with Shannon Hill. Both at Carlisle.
I came home with twice the skills I went with, and made a whole lot of friends from around the US. I try to make it to at least 3 classes a year now-a-days. Totally worth it!
When I find myself in a slump, I know it's time to go to a class.

Yup, I try and make at least 1 class a year. Usually ends up being 2 or more. Since I have started doing that(about the last 2 years) my abilities have gone up 10 fold easy!

definitely take classes whenever you can, i allow a certain $$ per year for this. worth every cent!
i find i get a renewed inspiration from the people around me, being with other artists rather than the usual alone in the basement is HUGE impact for me and why i liked AGI so much, so many people together vs the handfull in other classes.
as far as the class itself, invaluable info, definitely improves skills, but then, i usually find nuances of whats taught really sinks in my work a bit of time after the class, like i have to digest it i guess and practice the techniques as well, but even after not doing that specific thing, if i go back to it later , its like miraculously its better. it still amazes me that no matter what class you take or what you learn it improves your skills in other areas as well. i guess most of that is just deeper understanding of heat and consistent manipulation.
when i was younger and i wanted to do something and couldnt afford it, id let my whole family know what i wanted to do and on holidays/birthdays they would chip in towards it, it was how i saved up to do a lot of things and they liked giving me education rather than clothes etc.
good luck!
ro
thats what i do ro!!
every birthday/christmas the last 5 years all i've asked for is tools or classes.... youre right, they are much more apt to give me money twords things like this...
