View Full Version : What is this scuzz on my mibs?

This has been going on off and on for a while now and I am completely stumped on this. Sometimes I get a strange "scuzz" on my marbles always in the same spot, right where the front lensed side meets with the surface decorations of the back. These are boro marbles btw.
I thought for a while it was maybe graphite from my molds sticking to the hot glass and then causing the scuzz but now I don't think so. Next I thought that it might be some rogue fumes from the colors I usually use to art the backs of my mibs (mystery, a/p etc.) sticking to the clear-- now I'm not so sure on that either.
It usually starts to appear shortly after or right before I've got my backing design done, like when I'm just about to start rounding. When the scuzz first appears, it almost looks like fuming that wont burn off but it quickly turns into a white chappy looking nastiness.
It doesn't happen on every marble and I just can't seem to figure out the exact reason why this is happening. I cut down on the time consuming techs thinking maybe I was working these colors too long but no luck, it's still happening. Any help on this issue is GREATLY appreciated, thank you.

These pics are of the latest scuzz to ruin a piece. I built this marble in two halves, the front is a clear lense and the back is solid NS Amethyst striped with Mill Moss. You can see the scuzz right at the edge of the moss. It is possible to heat and peel the scuzz off but since it always happens right at the edge of the surface design it kinda ruins any detail work I had going :ohwell:

Again, thanks for any help you can give and sorry for posting in 2 forums if that chaps anybody

looks like fume scuzz. :rolleyes just a guess. i get something that looks similar when i use gold fume. gotta clean that up when you see it. either swipe it or burn it off.

Just a guess, but maybe you're heating up the marble a little too much when you're laying on that backing color. Sometimes if it's too hot when you're putting that wrap on the back it'll stretch/smear the clear and make it devitrify. Or maybe it's a mix of devit and fume. I've definitely had stuff like that before, it sucks. Other than that, it looks like a cool marble.

Do you make your implosion (hollow I'm assuming) on a blowtube (or point), round the front, punty to the front, then rip off the point and wipe around the edges to get extra glass off and make it round and whatever?

You could be wiping sloppily sometimes. Sometimes if you wipe shit off you are smearing shit on too. like crappy clear from the punty. Then when you assemble the two halves most of the crap gets sandwiched but the outer ring of crap stays "outside". You might not even notice that until later when it gets a second heating when your doing your backing decoration.

that's my guess. But if you're not doing it that way then nevermind.

What brand of clear are you using for these?

everytime ive gotten that , its been from making a piece, lettin it cool down ,then using it later without cleaning it real good. at first i didnt know what it was till i saw fingerprint patterns on it.the other thing ive got it from is when turbo fumes that nast fog then i try to burn it off and instead i burn it in

I gotta say it looks like dust or graphite scuzz.... from the pics anyways.

It could also be scuzz from a broken rod... dunno if that makes any sense tho.

What brand of clear are you using for these?

I've only really ever used Simax for everything, maybe I should try Schott?

I do the implosion part on usually a 19 or 25 SHW point and then clean it up and back it with solid color all in one swoop, no cooling or kiln time. I'm super anal about stuff in my work so I usually work really clean also (tho you wouldn't know it by checking out my shop). I was thinking it might be fumes like Josh said, but the mib in the pics is backed with the regular non-striking Amethyst and M.Moss :ohwell:
Maybe Ben is right and I'm getting the clear too hot when I wrap the back?? I usually make one wrap, melt it in, do another etc. so I don't trap bubbles that will surface later when I'm rounding.

Thanks for all the ideas... got any more? :lol

I get that stuff sometimes. I even get it when there's no color even close. It's kind of like a devit that won't melt in with a hot driving flame. Try a softer flame way out and see if that helps. If you try to burn it in too hot, it will boil and scuz on you. If that doesn't work, just cover that bitch with some cobalt. ;)

looks like dirt from ur rod, or putting the mib in the kiln and not wiping it down. it could be one of the above post too now u have to figure out what u did during ur prosses that matches one of these. my pipes used to do that it was from to much heat, i turned up the ox and no more problems.
