In case you haven't checked the events section in a while...

There are a couple spaces left for my class titled Structural Integrity @ the Pittsburgh Glass Center June 25th -30th.
This will be an excellent class where we will focus on the techniques that i have been using most recently in my work to make kinetic sculpture. I have designed this class to be accessible/beneficial to all levels of students. From the more experienced flameworker looking to broaden their technical vocabulary to someone who is interested in utilizing but not necessarily specializing in flameworking.
I am a very energized and thorough teacher, and i am more than happy to share any information i have with my students. My hope for this class is that students will further explore their own sculptural aspirations by using my work and techniques as a jumping off point.

Structural Integrity
Flameworking may be used as a tool to strengthen one’s vocabulary in glass.
Drawing inspiration from the many steel structures in greater Pittsburgh,
this class will investigate contemporary flameworking applications to broaden
the horizons of our glass sculpture. Class demonstrations will cover a wide range
of solid and blown fabrication techniques at the torch with clear and colored
borosilicate glass. We will expand our scope further by integrating simple
kilnforming and coldworking techniques. Students should come prepared with
sketchbooks, ideas, and questions. Students will leave with knowledge of
fundamental, intermediate, and advanced skills to execute their ideas at the torch.
This course is open to students of all levels.

I will expand on this by saying that i want to direct this class towards an investigation of the mechanical/architectural possibilities of flameworked borosilicate glass. It is a wonderfully durable and resilient material, that lends itself well to the construction of spans, trusses, towers, and the like. Beyond the long days in the glass studio consisting of demonstrations, work time, problem solving, and group discussions, i would very much like to seize the night and explore the city of Pittsburgh by bicycle to see some of its many steely bridges and industrial mechanisms. so i will encourage all students to bring cameras, and sketchbooks, and bicycles, and wild imaginations!
