Yep, this piece just got rejected from an art show. It is called "Reduce Reuse Recycle". I have a tendancy to make sculpture by gathering up a whole bunch of stuff and sticking together the parts that I like. The first shot is from above.

Oh, and before you ask, the jawbone is a northern deer and I found the skull while in the woods one day.

Thanks! Actually the leaves are copper that I heat treated to get them to turn colors.

Looks really good JO...

perhaps it was not within the theme of the show??

There wasn't a theme. I live in SC, and things tend to be pretty conservative here, including the art. I wasn't very surprised that it got rejected. The jawbone was a bit much for them. :lol

Yes Mixed media will always be the last accepted into the shows. Did you apply in glass or mixed media. What did your other slides represent? The jurors usually have there masters in some 3d field and look for work they can identify with. If you want to continue with mixed media I would look for a consistent theme. Your art should convey some type of message or emotion IMO.

every successful artist that i've met has experienced a great deal of rejections. i think that you just need to keep trying until you find the right niche. this work is expressive and valid. keep shopping it around and i'm sure you will find a place to show that will bring you to the crowd that it was meant for. galleries have a way of thickening your skin. just keep walking towards the light.

Thanks guys! This was a show that was local to me, and all the artwork had to be submitted in person. So the judge got to see all the pieces right in front of her. There weren't any categories for me to submit to... they were just all lumped together. That is pretty normal around here.

Jo, why did you do it?

What's your message behind it?

How did you feel when you started making it, and do you think it completely projects what you feel?

Since it's usually the critics that determine what "art" of any form actually is, you shouldnt feel so bad.

kepp that piece away from my old man. deadstuff on a plaque with sticks is his kinda thing.

I tend to make pieces like this like I make my quilts. I start with a central idea or peice of fabric (in this case the deer jawbone) and build on it till it looks "finished". I must admit that I'm not an artist in the traditional sense of starting with a finished piece in mind and then making that. I don't have any art school training... I'm actually a math prof. :tongue2: Mostly I build pieces to get the darn ideas out of my head before they drive me crazy! I've never had a message or feeling in mind, except in the one case where I made a sculpture representing my hubby's MS. That one got accepted into a show, then someone knocked it off the stand and had to pay for it. :D

Canaan, I have to keep it away from my dad too. I think he might break into my house when I finish the piece with the deer skull.

this is an art show reject too, this piece 'spring ahead!' was submitted to a show about 'spring' in philly, have no idea why, i suppose they were looking for different kinds of work, if i see what got in i will have a better idea as to why it didnt, your piece is cool, just not what they wanted for that show, ive submitted others to other shows, sometimes yes sometimes no, just keep submitting!

Pieces get rejected for various reasons. I've never done a show where I actually have to bring the piece in, usually a jury looks at pics or for a finer art show, slides. And the slides have to be just as good as the work in some cases. I've also sat in on a jury, and I'd like to think that all are not judged by what I seen, meaning if the judges don't like it, or wouldn't buy it, it went into the reject pile, I'm sure not all are judged like that. Most my submitted slides are done by an outside panel of artists, hired to judge the pics/slides, never heard of bringing in a piece for jurying, but as you say in your neck of the woods, maybe things are done differently.

Todd, that piece is way cool. But I can tell you it would get rejected around here because it has *gasp* nekked peoples on it. Yep, I live in the south.

Don't feel bad Todd, you'll never find out the real reason why it was rejected.
One year I almost didn't get in my own hometown art show, it draws about 80,000 people a 3 day festival. Lucky one of my friends are on the jury commitee, and heard my name, so I've since donated pieces for charity, to the library, etc. I submitted a fairy, but the girl I know told the jury I do more than just those type pieces, wildlife, jewelry, so sometimes your best piece isn't always a good one to send in, diversity is a virture.
