So I got a free booth at a pretty good art show this weekend!! I was wondering what any of you do about giving receipts to customers for their purchase? Do you just buy the cheap money/rent receipt books, some other type of receipt?? Any help would be great since I need to keep sales records for tax purposes.
get the ones that make a copy so you have a record of your sales/orders at the end of the weekend. it helps to staple a business card (or something w/ your info) to thier reciept so that they can find you if they want more.
good luck, m

You can get a basic sales receipt book at any office supply store. That is what I use at shows. I get the small ones 5x7 ish and it has a white slip that copies onto a yellow slip.

or you could go old school and get a receipt machine. Somewhere areound here we have one I found. It uses double receipt carbonless copies. Fill out the receipt in the machine, turn the crank, and it spits out the original receipt and puts the copy in a locked hopper.

When working art shows, that is the perfect time to establish a "mailing list"
Anyone who buys a piece have sign up, once or twice a year do mailers to these costumers. (of work you have available currently)
You'll be surprised how much repeated business you will get this way.
( best time to do one of the mailing is between last week of nov- 2nd week of dec.)
You will have others who will want to sign up(and by all means dont be rude and not let them, however put a mark (or symbol) by all the costumers who have signed up and purchased something ( as these people will be way more likely for repeat business)
Good luck
PS - Garret - I did call you a few weeks back

I have a stamp that I stamp onto every receipt page and I pop a biz card in the bag also
I've been thinking about adding a discount code the the stamp or biz card to drive website business as well

At shows I give out a $5 coupon for any auction win in exchange for their email.

I just print my own receipts.
Owning a printing company has its perks...

card collectors? whadya mean?
Card collectors are just people who take cards from you and have no real intention on contacting you. I figure 90% of my cards go to card collectors. As for reciepts I use the little books from Office Depot and I fill it out soley to keep as a record for myself, most people don't really want another peice of paper in the pocket.

Are there any good reads, on paying taxes and keeping records as an artist? It's something I need to learn about.

This is some really good advise! We keep a book of mailing address and leave it out at all the art shows. We specifically ask buyers for there addy but let anyone sign in.
Two weeks before a art show we send out a postcard to anyone in that town and let them know what we are up to. It's a great way to introduce new work. We do the same for galleries in other towns. First send a nice color pamphlet of old work. Then two weeks before a cold call send them a pamphlet of current work. When you walk into the gallery and introduce yourself they will remember and if they like what they saw chances are better of having them buy outright.

There are people in the biz administration in every town that are happy to help. Just give them a call and they will help with sales tax and such. We changed ours from quarterly to twice a year. Once in the spring and once in the fall this revolves around our shows when we collect most of sales tax and do allot of credit card sales.
