ouch.... Thats gotta hurt... $40 a tank would have made me go to a different Ox supply all together... i'm paying far less than that and i still feel raw after a restock
of my 6 tanks... my local supplier will do a liquid tank for $150 a month...
glad you got a better deal and i wish the best for your new hook up...:D

I get the same as you ShttrdSpctrm. Depends on which guy writes up the ticket as to what I get charged. It sucks.
ya, they jacked me up to $36 after taxes plus rent right now(281cuft), total BS. They say i don't go through enough tanks blah blah blah.......but they are such nice jerks. They always have dollar signs in their eyes when i walk in.

I dont like airgas . They are really rude . And Im sure there are companies that dont care if youre residential.
polar cryogenics is cool about residential spots.
When I was in Oregon I used Polar Cryo. They are really reasonable about the whole thing. No deposit, just pay COD.

That's funny as shit, but what's even funnier is that the Chinese are paying high prices for O2 also. In our Chinese factory, we get O2 from the French company Air Liquide and the price is pretty comparable to what we pay here in the US.

I bet they only charge you that much. They probably charge the factory that much becuase they know its owned by an American.

I hear ya Shttrd, the airgas people here won't give me liquid either! I've tried to talk to every guy there including the manager, and offered them all kinds of incentives to hook it up, but I did not prevail.:tongue2: Weird considering Airgas in PA gave me liquid no problem anywhere I needed it! I think they are a little more sketch where I live in CA do to the fire danger that is present most of the year.
I pay 19.33 a tank, but sometimes if there is someone new at the store they will try and get you for $45. Oxy is very negotiable, and you have to be willing to haggle with them. I swear I learned how to be an assertive person just dealing with oxy companies over the years!! Play the game with them and you can usually get what you want.
Often if you tell them you are a glassblower and the volume of oxy you use a month they will lower the price pretty easily, most welders don't use the amount of oxygen we do.
It's a never ending battle I get a kick out of sometimes!! Keep fightin the fight!:D
ShttrdSpctrm

ya thats the deal for glassblowers , lower prices cause we use so much. the price for welders is like three times that.
most welders don't use the amount of oxygen we do.

I dont know about that. My guy at the welding supply said that some guys go through 20 liquid tanks a week. So Id say thats a little more than we use lol.

My buddy works on the North Slope (Alaska Pipeline) and his team of boilermakers use about 15 LOX dewers a week. at 550.00 a dewer! i pay almost 400.00 and i have to pick it up.
Welding companies working on Pipes lines, bridges and sky scrapers use that much O2 but I guarentee that they have anywhere from 10 to 50 welders working up to three shifts per day. As far as small businesses that require a liquid oxygen dewar, glass blowers use alot of O2, more than an average welder.
Greymatter Glass
04-18-2007, 10:14 PM
most places using more than a few dewers a day go to micobulk storage and refill with a bob truck.
The labs here sometimes go through 10,000 L per day of LO2 and 50,000L per day of LN2. Cooling lasers and stuff. If you look towards Albuquerque many nights you can see the Sandia green laser from as far away as Las Vegas, Denver, and Dallas.
the matheson Trigas oxygen trucks pretty much only deliver late at night because of the hazards involved in shipping 5,000 gallons of LOX across town on a semi. Less traffic = less hazards.
*shrug*
Still, i was told there's about $15 worth of oxygen in a dewer as far as cost to the supplier goes. 1000% mark up is nice.

I pay $26 for a k tank...$36.00 for a T tank.
since I've been at it so long, the company has changed hands 4 times, Kilbourn was bought by red arrow, they were bought by AGS, then Linde sucked them up, and I pay them direct on a 30 day net, but have to pick them up at the local welding supplier, a high school friend. They quite delivering to me when I gave up my retail outlet...so I think $15.00 is a steal.

The cheapest we can get it around here is $20 per tank. One place is $35-40 per tank. If we were to agree to buy like 5 tanks a week, I can get it down to $15 per tank.
I did a demo at a local university a while back, and we used their oxygen. We ran out and had to have more brought to us. They charged $6.50 for a tank delivered. They said "that is the rate the University negotiated with us". If they are still making money at $6.50 for a tank and delivering it, you can imagine how much mark-up there is in it.

if you use airgas. call your local store and ask to talk to your sales guynot the desk guy they have guys that do only sales. get a account setup with a fixed price. they give you a rating and it effects your pirce on everything in the store. dont talk to the desk guys most cannot change your account. most of airgases o2 is bought from the steel industry and they pay like .70 cents a tanks. tell them you know people all over the country paying 10 dollers. as far as the liquids go. its generally not a fire dept. thing in residential. its a weight thing you cant bring the big trucks onto the side streets. medical patients can get large liquids at there houses if they want to.ive worked with a airgas that has a normal truck with a lift gate and they would deliver anywhere. ask about the smaller micro bulks they have tiny ones. alot of those can be delivered residential like fuel oil. mostly you have to argue if you have a friend getting a better price take his reciept with you. be nice make them cookies at xmas make their girlfriends trinkets ect. when you show up to the sales meeting have a trinket to give the guy. good luck with the o2 barons. peace brett

Welding does not use oxygen. Brazing does and so does cutting unless your using plasma.
Not that a welder can't use allot of oxygen in the biz but it's mostly demolition work that burns up the o2.

depends on what kind of welding. electronic welding machines, such as migs, don't. oxy/accetalyne (<--bad sp) oviously do. the welders i know typically use both depending on what they are working on....
btw i am really horrible at welding, it's kind of sad actually. :bummed:
....$15.72 out the door for a K tank and i still bitch about it. i was getting them for $11.00.
the guy wanted $3.10 a gallon for propane but when i told him i was going to get it for $2.50 a gallon on the way home it was all of a sudden 2.50 a gallon for me.

Yes torch welding does indeed use oxy. Torch welding is like brazing except brazing uses brass rod and can usually be done to join to different metals together (steel/iron). Most weekend warriors like myself and small outfits use arc/mig/tig welding though.

Does anyone have a url that shows the different sizes of tanks ? I searched on google but could not find anything.
As all I have ever used is an E tank of compressed oxy and it costs me rougly $80 USD a month. So when I read this thread and hear people complaining about paying $30 for a T tank, I think that is a great price. But I am not sure how big a T tank is, but I figure that as the letter goes up in the alphbet so does the size of the tank ? So to me personally if I was getting more oxy than my current E tank and only paying $30 USD that would be a great deal (for me).
Conchis

I wish it were that simple Meerkat but it doesn't do the alphabet thing.....I thought it does too... A T is roughly a K and a half. but an M is about a half of a K (I think) ....it's a screwy system...... I've had trouble finding a site that does what you're looking for as well. I switched from K's to T's about 2 months ago. I pay 4 bucks more for half again as much as I had in a K....it was a real deal for me. The one problem is...they are heavy and they are just a little bit too big for me to be able to transport in the vehicle I have....sooooo.....I have to get them delivered now and there's a delivery charge.....oh man.....one door opens another closes. I'm still better off, but not quite as much as I had initially thought.

these are the only ones i could find im not sure if its right or all of em heheh
D cylinders - 15 cubic feet
E cylinders - 24 cubic feet
M cylinders - 122 cubic feet
G cylinders - 244 cubic feet
H or K cylinders - 250 cubic feet
T cylinders - 337 cubic feet
Oxygen varies so much per place it is not even funny I was paying 38 for a k tank at one place and finally found some place that I pay around 15 for a t tank ( got to leave 150 dollar a tank deposit though) they also ave the cheapest liquid in town but the refuse to deliver to a residential so I have to haggle with the native Americans at the other place but at lest they will deliver.

This post inspired me to do some more research on oxy suppliers in my area and man did I luck out....found another supplier, used the "portable welder" line (props to crip for that one) got a quote then asked for a better offer and now I'm payin half price and no security deposit on as many T tanks I want....:D much easier to get a good discount when you're a welder

Crip what I think is fucked up is not that you got a price and some one else some where else can get it cheaper. That compairing appals to grapes.
To me whats fucked is if your friend called the same place. and random dude calling on the phone gets it at one price. While dude in wheel chair(that would be you) gets charged more. HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
I've been at the welding store and have seen them charge a chick one price then turn right around and 30 seconds later give me the reg price as soon as the lady is out of site.
You should try calling on the phone and see if you get one price then go back in person and see if they try to charge you the higher porce. When they do. tell them to bite you at do a wheel chair wheely and kick him in the teeth. Then tell them you'll let it slide if they give em to you for $10 each

Oh ya they are making a killing still at $6.50 a tank.
If I was set up to fill tanks from my gen I could still be quadrupleing my $ selling a K tank for $6.50 each at the going rate of just above a buck to make a K tanks worth. or about $25 a liquid if I had a devise called a cold finger to turn it in to liquid. And thats on the real small scale So the gas Cos are for sure making it for less then what I am. Being that the bigger the set up the less it costs per cubic foot to produce.

I wonder how big this gen would be smutty? http://www.labx.com/v2/spiderdealer2/vistaSearchDetails.cfm?LVid=3156385
In my experience gas welding has greatly declined with the introduction of oh so cheap anyone can own one mig-setups. When I did my first welding ticket test in 1980 I had to gas weld 1/2 "plate in all 4 positions as well as arc weld the same.
Never see anyone doing gas welding these days it seems, somewhat of a lost art I think.
