The other day I pulled a very thin piece of glass, less than half a MM. After hitting it with a bic lighter, it was soft enough to bend. I know there's probably some reason for this happening that will make me look like an idiot, but don't bics on burn at 300-400 degrees, and boro melt have upwards of 1000? Just wondering if anyone knows the logic to this.

Thanks.

If a bics flame wasn't hotter then 400F, it wouldn't even be able to burn paper. Wikipedia says a butane flame averages about 1292F.

I have made a few little sculptures (mostly like hearts and stuff) out of 3mm clear rods on a lighter. Yes, I was bored...

butane can burn up to 1970 degrees C, so your lighter was definitely hot enough to melt the stringer......even a wax candle can burn up to 1400 C.

Oh damn. I had no clue bics were so hot.

The lighter flame Is reaching the melting temp of the glass.
But its to do with BTU's not the degrees Thats mattering here.

The thiner the stringer the less btu's Or amount of heat it takes to melt it. You can melt steel with a biq lighter if its a thin enought pcs. If you had a pcs that was to thick to melt with just one lighter 2 lighter would melt it faster. Same temp but 2x's the btu's or amount of heat.

Picture a big torch like a GTT with its center fire and outer fire. The are all the same flame temp. But with only the 7 port center fire going you would have a heck of a time working some 2 inch rod. But you click on the outter rings all of wich have the same heat PER CANDLE. just lots more of them. and the Amount of heat increases but not the tempature.

Heat and tempature are kind of not the same thing tho they are related to each other. Kind of like how electric has volts, watts, Amps, ohm's

Here is a link to a page (http://www.derose.net/steve/resources/engtables/flametemp.html) that has a chart for some common fules and there flame temps.

BTW a good magnifing glass will melt stringer to. ANd if you hold it on a pcs of amber purple long enought it will strike to be the nicest purple.

Ya I was board one day.

Tho you don't hear of it much Carbon monoxide Is used to give a boost to some flames. But it won't burn on its own.
All that carbon gives it a lot of umhp.
In ny city you can get piped in carbon monoxide from the utility Co.

Damn...thats funny. If your really bored, set a bic on the ground and whack it with a golf club, I prefer a 3 wood, just make sure their at least half empty.

Just for clarification Steve, are you talking about smashing or hitting a drive with the golf club and the bic?

hitting the lighter with the club, much like hitting a ball off a tee, except no tee needed as the lighter stands up by itself...why, you bored too?

I've never done it with new lighter full of fluid, half empty makes a loud enough bang and a good flame burst, I used the short bics, I think a big one full of fluid might be pushing my luck.

Oh making bombs and blowing stuff up. Yep I way so went threw that stage. from lighters to propane tanks.

But its been about 20 years sence I have done any thing that fun.

We have used a candle to shape some stringers for kiln fusing projects...96 coe
tho. I'm gonna have to try that magnifying glass on the amber purple colors.

You've apparently never seen me play golf. It would probably take me 10-12 swings just to hit it...

heat builds. hold the lighter up too your temp thing in your kiln and watch it go from 400 to 1500 pretty quick.its cause the glass or metal or whatever it may be is storing the heat.

Thats a good way to check if your pyrometer is working, using a lighter, temp shoots right up thier if working properly, had a kiln problem once and obviously, I thought of everything. whacking lighters with clubs is not my favorite pastime by the way, just did it out of frustration after a bad game, and got more enjoyment from that than actually playing golf...
