View Full Version : Daniel Trilli
I saw this yesterday and think it should be brought to peoples' attention here. http://p104.ezboard.com/Very-Sad-News--We-Have-Lost-Daniel-Trilli/fglasswizzardsfrm9.showMessage?topicID=1334.topic
This is the saddest thing i've seen in awhile. From the post it says he died of dehydration due to heavy metal poisioning. If anyone can think of something we can do for his family and his best friend Anton count me in -rob

I'm sad to hear this, but the heavy metal poisoning thing bothers me a bit.
The article states he working for 15 hours without ventilation and subsequently died......I seriously doubt only 15 hours will cause anyone to die from heavy metal poisoning, even without ventilation. There's something else going on here - the article states that the ER took blood then released him, I don't know of any ER that would do that, quite honestly. Someone who is vomiting and severely dehydrated would immediately be hooked up to IV's, given fluids and then stabilized. Investigations would be made into what was causing the problem in the first place. They'd be placed on oxygen and perhaps even leachate medications to try to get any metals out of his system.......sorry, but I don't buy this explanation......
whatever the case, sorry to hear that.

I could understand how you could find this hard to believe. I on the other hand do believe this. When I first started lampworking I accidentally took a breath of a cloud of silver fume. the next day I awoke w/severe pnemonia and bronchidus. I seriously felt like I was going to die w/out medical attention. As for the situation at the hospital I also could see that happening, a friend of mine went into the emergency room with a broken shoulder he even had cash on hand to pay for services, they turned him away telling him there is nothing they could do for him without insurance.

I feel bad for the loss non the less.
I also feel there is more to the story and if that is what really happened the hospital should be corrected. I can't imagine that bit of fuming would do anyone in. I know jewelers that work silver and gold no ventilation and have been at it for years. Something isn't adding up but still the loss is huge.

really scary, as well as sad.
i watched his work on gp.org a bit ago and really liked the unique shaping and streching he emphasized in his work...
all of it was really just amazing, especialy the giant black contraption with the big stone in it.
scary as well with the reality that the doctors just tossed him aside with out insurance, but money is what it's about not lives of course for them.
and as sad as it is to say, it's a good wake up call for some with poor ventalation.
although the only thing im curious about, is what the last piece he made looks like. unless it was unfinished i assume he kilned it before he went to the hospital. a true work of art most likly with 15 hours into it.
Sad news.
Let's try and refrain from letting this thread drift from what it's about.

no effin' way. That happend here in new mexico? Anyone know where he lived?
Also, where ever he did go, if it was in NM, it wasn't a hospital - walk in HMO clinic maybe... but hospitals here are required by law to treat people no matter if they can pay or not.
still, that's bunk no matter how it happend :(

I respect Daniel very much. His work was amazing and I understand him to be an amazing person. I have been praying for him and his family.
I had a thought of something that we could do for his family. I beiieve it would be thoughtful to send a marble to his parents from each person that is willing. I might sound cheesy but I do believe that his family would apprecitate that fact that many people will miss him and that he was respected and look up to by our community. I believe it would speak to his family from us as a community. A community that Daniel was a part of.
It would be nice to hear from people to see if you like that idea or not. If not please try to offer ideas. It is tough becasue it is not like we can bring his family dinner. We can only offer something in so many ways.

This is a very sad tragedy!
With all due respect to Daniels' family and friends, I did not know him but knew of him. I will always mentally picture his unique style of artwork, and even his picture working at the torch. Since the first time I saw his postings on the internet, I have admired his work. I have been saddened by this since I read about it yesterday and am happy to have this forum of our peers where we can pay our respects.
I would also be honored to make a tribute marble for an auction for the family or just to give them to show what an impact he had on his community
I will never forget his work, or the tragic way he left us:depressed
with respect,

maybe each of us could send out a glass flower? A bouquet of different style flowers would look cool.

I think that is a much better idea. I am all for the glass flower. I am pretty sure we will have an address soon. I think we might post an email address for interested people and someone will respond back to you with the address so we are not posting addresses in a public forum. I will let you know when something has become available unless of course someone else does first. Good idea Melt. The flowers will represent what we are trying to say much better.

I'm pretty sad to hear this as well. If any of you have seen my work, you know that Daniel's work was a big influence on my work, even though I don't own one. Yet. I never got the chance to meet him. One day I hope to own a piece of his work.

daniel trilli was the man, everyone knew that. when he first showed up on gp i think a lot of jaws dropped seeing his work and how little time he had on the torch. i know i was blown away instantly, really admiring his attention to detail and abillity to work on such a small scale, he had some serious skills and determination. a huge lose for everyone that knew him or of him.
and yeh that time machine looking piece he made with the chunk of moldavite was some serious shit.
where do we send these flowers to? awsome idea btw

Damn this is so sad. I was amazed the first time I ever saw his work. He boggled my mind. When he first posted pics he only had two years on the torch, was working on a major/minor and was missing a couple fingers. I still dont know how he fit so many reversals into such small disks. His style was truly unique and he will be greatly missed.

I haven't posted on this cause I just don't know what to say. I loved that kid. I am selfishly devastated that we lost on of our brightest lights. One of my pieces from a trade has these beautiful raked angels. So damn appropriate. We should talk with Anton, as the emotions settle a bit and let he and Daniel's mom guide us. I personally would love a Trilli memorial Whoopzip with proceeds going to Mom's. What up Troy???
I will say I feel responsible in a way. I have been working on a vent article half-assed for two years. Enough of that shit. I am going full steam. It will be in the Fall issue. If anyone has any links or references to solid, empirically proven vent info for crafters or welders, please pass it on. I want to wrap it up in June.
Anton, thanks for thinking of how much Daniel meant to those that knew him personally and through his work. It was a hard word to spread.
Daniel, my friend, make sure they got gas and glass for us when we get there. A spirit like yours doesn't fade away.
Love and strength,

Hi Doug,
Thank you for your thoughtful replies on these Daniel Trilli posts. Daniel was working in Cloudcroft at the time, and I believe was taken to the hospital in Alamogordo. I'd known Daniel for many years, and it was he who introduced me to torch work, though I was originally buds with his parents. He had a rash and other symptoms of heavy metal poisoning at the hospital, but I don't find it hard to believe that the ER doc didn't connect the dots, as heavy metal poisoning is not a common ailment. I don't know if his mom told the doctor about his glass work. I know that he just loved to fume, especially with gold. I'll miss him as a friend and a teacher - may he rest in peace. Wayne

I made a marble last week in respect to Daniel's memory. I saw an address posted for his mom, but i just wonder if anyone has had conatact with the family? I wonder if gifts like this would be well recieved, or if they would prefer we hold an ebay auction or something?
I just feel alittle selfish, I never met Daniel, but I have so many feelings about him. Making the marble was my way to meditate on these thoughts, so now I just wonder if sending it to his family is the right thing to do....
If I dont see any response to this I will send it out on thursday or so.

I am moved by these discussions and want to respond to your comments regarding Daniel Trilli. I am his dad or "pops" as he called me. After going through Daniel's stuff, I say that my honor for Daniel has multiplied a lot. I was aware of his many overnight studio sessions but still am inpressed by the massive body of work he produced. Also, seeing Daniel's written words/journals and iconography revealed the depth of his spirituality. He taught people for free. He made incredible pieces and many times gave them away. I used to get upset with him sometimes because his generosity seemed extravagant. Anyway, I wanted to give a little background as to the beautiful intentions this young man idealized in his life around him.
We, the family, have paid for all expenses related to his passing. If people want to create something maybe set up an annual scholarship fund in his name for people who apply. Glass artists and others can contribute to this and enable someone. I don't know.
We may never know why Daniel passed away. He was sick and vomiting for several days. The nausea came on four days before he died. I talked to him that Friday (4 days before he died) and he thought his upset stomach was related to food that may have been bad. He was not fuming or working on his project the day he started to feel sick. Whatever the hospital could or didn't do, there are people with appropriate backgounds who are following up.
In the long run, use ventilation! In the short walk, thank you for your kind words, concern and intentions.
One thing is for real. Daniel loved his friends and family and we will miss his beautiful face and being. He worked hard and played hard. His inspirations fueled us all in some way. Daniel and I traveled a lot together and he always got down and inside with locals, even if he couldn't speak the language. I'm sure wherever he is now, he is down with it and reaching to perfect some aspect of his new reality.
Put peace in your heart. Be more patient and kind. Daniel wanted this for me and for those around him. Keep chasing your dreams!
Peace!
Your family are in the thoughts and prayers of many people in the glass community. As a father I can't imagine what strength it takes to get through a time like this.
Keep your head up and know that your son was truly an artists who in the few years of working with this medium pushed glass work beyond the norm. He was an inspirations and a breath of fresh air to a lot of people here.
Thanks for posting "Pops".
