I was 22 and heard it at work on the radio. I sat their stunned for a few minutes and then the station played Dead music all day which helped ease the pain. Wow...10 years already. Seems like yesterday sometimes.

I was 20, moving into a new house. Unloaded some stuff and got into the car to go get more. Turned the radio on, it was one of those morning shows where the dj's just laugh like dicks all the time, like an alternative to coffee or something. This time they weren't laughing and I thought it was a bad joke. But they never laughed. I have always thought about that. They made fun of everybody, for anything. That was the only time I ever heard them being serious.
In high school, the dead heads were the only people i found that i could identify with. More accepting, more family than my own blood. I always wondered what would happen when the dead started dropping. I kind of expected Jerry to go first. It was weird. Like loosing a leader, or in a way like a religious icon. I know that sounds silly....it sounds silly to me when i say it. But the music and the scene pulled me through allot of shit back then. Wherever i was, the sound of his voice and guitar was like an anchor to a peaceful feeling. Very grounding for me. He affected many people in many ways, he probably annoyed many people too. Oh well. In the end, he was just a random dude making music and livin' life like the rest of us. We should all hope to leave some kind of peaceful memory of our passage to someone out there. peace. zac

I was in Whistler, and had just come off of the west coast tour in early June. I remember being by myself and hearing the news on tv. It was almost un-real. That magic, which can't really be described, but that magic with The Dead was gone. I tried to talk to some folks who were new friends and the response I got was " i guess he's not truckin' anymore" oh well. The grateful Dead got me onto a good path showed me a way to be in a freaky world. Brought me to Canada and for this I will always be Grateful. Merry Jerrymas. -Shadowboxing the apocolypse and wandering the land.

Wow. 10 years. I was on my way to a morning cooking job.

I thought the riots and the deaths-by-bridge-collapse killed him.
Well, I'm sure it was his time. Those events just probably made him sad.
I also thought the "I'm grateful he's dead" shirts were the most disrespectful thing I'd ever seen.
Like wearing a "hey, you're beloved dead grandpa was a cocksucker" shirt.

Oh well. If I got angry, I'd just be the same boy going to his cooking job.

making jewelry in south florida (for tour)....didnt cry for years. I felt like his little body couldnt hold him in anyway...why fight it, it seemed like he had exploted into a micro galaxy, and he was everywhere...maybe it was the stuff i ate while on tour....man those burritos! I finally cried when i heard him live 7 years later, and realised how scattered the love had gotten....we are infiltrating the macrocosm now....feel the love!

The last time I saw Jerry live was back in 1991 at the Bill Graham Memorial in Golden Gate Park. 250,000+ heads gathered in the park for a free festival and not one arrest. It was a beautiful scene. That was the last time I hung out with true Deadheads in numbers. Although some of the "jamband" festivals I've been to since Jerry's passing have been nice, I've never felt such positive energy like I did amongst fellow deadheads. Something else seemed to die within the scene besides Jerry but I can't seem to put my finger on it. I just haven't felt the real magic since the days of the Grateful Dead. Maybe it's just me.

I had just got back from winter tour and my girlfriend of four years said she would never see me again if I went to another show. I heard they had started to play Unbroken Chain again so I took off in May of 95 to see them play it in Tampa. It was the last time I saw the Dead play with Jerry. Everything was kind of a blur for a few months after that, so I honestly don't know where I was or what I was doing, but I remember thinking that it was sad and wondering what everybody was going to do. I still wonder what happened to some of those people, and I have run into some of them later at other lots and such. I was twenty two years old...what a strange time.

I was working construction in Lake Tahoe, radio just wasn't my thing so I didn't hear about it until I heard my neighbor sobbing loudly through the ceiling when I got home from work. That guy was a prick from there on out. Could n't stand those old stories about shows, over and over.Makes it hard to partake with someone when they use you as a therapist when burnin' one. F**K, I hate that.

I was moved by the fact that he touched so many, yet unimpressed by how many people fell when he did. Co-dependancy will kill you too.

RIP Jerry, everyone else, back to work.

!0 years already!!
I was tree planting in northern Alberta at the time. That day was actually the day I planted the most tree I ever planted(3600). I was planning to go on dead tour after the season. Ended up moving to the west coast instead

I remember what I was doing the day Lennon was shot. I was working as a welder in this industrial shop and the radio was on. The announced Lennon had been shot and the red-neck shop forman said "About damn time". I wasn't a happy camper. I remember what I was doing when Stevie Ray Voughn died also. I got to see him twice.

I never was much of a Greatful Dead fan but I respect their music and their contribution to the world. The world is a better place because Jerry Garcia, as well as the rest of the Dead, gave us their art. And Yeah, I remember what I was doing when the news came out. It was a sad day.

How come the people who need to die never do? I mean isn't Tommy Lee's time about up?? :D

Rock On!

I was one the lucky ones to catch the last show in Chicago, Soldier Field, on the field. Man did Jerry start that show off a little rough, but by the end of that show I thought it was the best I ever attended. Surely, miss the summer tours. Nothing possibly compares to the energy and guaranteed good times.

Almost. I was living in San Jose at the time and started making my way up Hwy 280 for the party in a 64 VW bus I just bought. I made it to Burlingame when the bus started shuttering so I turned back around and basically crawled back home. I missed the whole scene that day. I was bummed.

Awesome...I used to hang out on Telegraph quite a bit in my early 20's. My dad studied at UC Berkeley (and helped huck tear gas back at the cops) in the late 60's. I'm sure you're aware of Rasputin Music. I helped open up their Campbell store back in 1996. Cool place.

Anyway...I'll send you a PM. Would dig hooking up with other blowers. I feel all alone out here in the desert.

oh...I've been getting my glass in Santa Cruz and sometimes Mountain View when I'm in the area.
