I noticed for Simax, in some sizes, there are only two thicknesses. Like 25.4 comes in a 4 and a 2.4 and 38.1 comes in a 4 and a 2.4, but 38 may come in a 1.4, 2, and 2.8. Would the 2.4 be considered Heavy or Medium?

Yeah - but my question is about the ones with only 2 sizes. What do you call those?

Simax has 4 sizes and their 38 x 4 is considered extra heavy wall. So that 38 x 2.8 might be regular heavy wall to them. I just think of it by the numbers not hw or med or standerd. Its awesome that theres soo many diffrent sizes and thicknesses to choose from tho.

to me, in any tube over say, 25mm would have to have a wall of 3.5mm or better to be heavy wall.
i have a case of 50x3.2 that i bought as medium wall.
you want extra heavy? get some milk tube. 50x8 baby. the only way to pull tubes. ;)

Want my $.02? Well here it is anyway.

If the wall thickness is 9 - 10% or more of the diameter, it is heavy wall.
If the wall thickness is 6 - 8% of the diameter, it is medium wall.
If the wall thickness is 5% or less, it is standard wall.

The heaviness of the wall depends on the ratio of wall thickness to diameter. I have always felt that the old Corning labeling of wall thickness as being "standard", "medium" or "heavy" was misleading and confusing. It is much more useful to know the actual thickness in mm. May I suggest that we start right here and cease using the old labels of "standard", "medium" or "heavy"?

Henceforth we should refer to tubing in this manner...

"Man I pulled some points with 38.1x4 Simax and burned myself because I did not let them cool long enough!"

That way there is no doubt about what you were using.

I remember looking at the corning chart in that book by homer hoyt, it would suck if that was it and that was the standard sizes. Its great to have any size tube you need for tube encasements. weird sizes big sizes everything. ABR even has those ridiculous sizes like 3 in 4 in 5 in 6 in. I want to get some of the 65-75, much bigger than that seems pointless. 6 in tube encasement with some 4 in hw would make a lot of tube tho...

standerd 7-8 mil for pin stripes, GA 12 mil for phat lines. Auctually a combo of that and 3-4 mil ns odds, with 65mm which is just a phat half inch bigger than 50mm, you could get sooo many lines in there.

I think Nate said he did tube pulls with 60 or 65.

mickelson is def right, it depends on the company, 38x4 feels like it should be considered heavy wall to me. 2.4 seems like more like medium wall as i know it...

AMEN to that. Corning's labeling just makes things more confusing for people new to lampworking.

Also just to point out that Simax produces the "extra heavy wall" tubing in American sizes to obviously compete with Pyrex. You'll notice those sizes are the ones available in extra heavy and the rest are all in metric sizing.
