Hi folks.
I wanted to chime in here about the final details of our 7th annual Art Glass Invitational / AGI. First and foremost, there are only 3 (maybe 4) tickets left, so if you would like to attend please give Elaine a call right away at (724) 791-2100.
Doni Hatz is the latest addition to AGI, and she will be demonstrating a jacketed perfume bottle. Here’s an example of her artistic and scientific skills combined to form something truly unique and beautiful:

She will also conduct a PowerPoint demonstration entitled: Murano, Italy: Study with the master Cesare Toffolo.
Doni recently traveled to Murano, Italy to study under one of the top flameworkers in the world, Cesare Toffolo. She spent three weeks in Murano learning the art of precision work not with laboratory glass but in fine Venician style glassware. This paper will give the notice as well as the experienced flame worker insight into some of Cesares' fine mastery of manipulating glass.
For those of you who do not know Doni, here’s a short bio:
Doni Hatz has been blowing glass for over 20 years. Born in Portland, Oregon she began interest in off-hand furnace glassblowing but within a year found the art of scientific glassblowing. Changing focus she moved to New Jersey to study under Joseph Luisi at Salem Community College at Carney's Point. She has worked laboratory apparatus at such institutions as Union Carbide Corporation, State University of New York at Stony Brook and currently with Procter & Gamble Corporation. She began to apply her experience with the art of precision work to glass beads, bottles, goblets and sculpture.
Here are some other details about AGI:
-Kevin Beecher (a.k.a. “Chef”) will be cooking for all of us the entire week. Donations of food and / or money will keep us all full. For those of you that have never experienced Kevin’s cooking, you’re in for a great treat!
-As you know, we are dedicating “The Robert Mickelsen Bar and Grill” this year, and Robert’s wife Cher will be here for the festivities. Each guest will receive a limited edition leather coaster to commemorate the occasion, and the logo was specifically designed to represent his work.
-Henry Grimmett from Glass Alchemy, LTD., and David Neal from Kimble Glass will be pulling rods of colored Uranium glass from a kiln that will be built here, and each person will take home a rod of this rare glass.
-The last 2 days of the event (Friday and Saturday) we are bringing in an ice cream vendor for your convenience and enjoyment. This is a full service vending trailer that travels to carnivals and shows. We actually had to have the electrical service in our house upgraded to accommodate this concession stand!
-J.C.’s husband Adam is a professional masseuse, and he will be here all week for those of you who would like a massage. There is no charge for a massage, but we ask that you do the right thing and kick him down some donations for his services.
-Generations Glass and Tecnolux will be handling all of the vending again this year for tools, supplies, and equipment. If there’s anything that you need, please be sure to call or e-mail them so they can bring what you need or want. They offer special discounts at AGI, and you can avoid shipping charges since you will be picking it up. Also, please contact Marcel if you would like to purchase a kiln while you’re here.
-Be sure to bring some completed work with you this year… we are setting aside some time to have a “show and tell” in Looie’s building, where we can all get together to see and / or show off some of the things we’ve been working on.
-Friday night is poker night, and we’re playing for glass prizes. Brush up on your poker skills, and remember our rules for the game… no knives over 4” long, and no guns over .38 caliber at the table : )
-We have a super special surprise guest that is 99% sure he or she will make an appearance at AGI for a couple of days. That’s all I can say about that : )
-Each year Deborah Carlson hosts an event called, “Playtime with Deb”, and this year she will be doing something similar (but a bit different) in which our guests get to work together in a fun and unique way.
-My good friend Rex Trimm will not be able to attend this year, although he will show up on Saturday night to jam with Eddie Pickett and the AGI band (please bring your instrument if you play one). Since he won’t be here, we will have a touching tribute to him in each of the 4 buildings, including the upper floor of The Lewis C. Wilson Building:

Thank you all for listening, and I’m soooo looking forward to seeing all of my old friends again, and hanging out with the new friends I have not met yet. I’d also like to give a big shout out to our sponsor, Glass Alchemy, LTD., for their continued support throughout the years. Take care everybody, and we’ll see you all in about a month!!!!!
With much love and respect,
Tom and Elaine Doner
P.S. - For those of you that know me, you’ll be in for a bit of a shock when you get here… I shaved off all of my hair. Yep… I’m a bald guy now.
