Just opening a discussion about encasing.. have been talk about before and tryied by many... ,
but ive been given many many small different rocks, mineral, precious and semi-precious stone to encase by a jeweler friends,... ruby, zirconium, crappy diamonds, quartz, Asbetos, rocksalt,...etc,etc..etc...
i know like over 95% of these will certainly turn into crap because they wont handle the heat nor they wont be compatible with boro and crackkkkk....

we know that opals, moldavite, sillicium, are encasable?... but what else...??

ive bought some rock from Morrocco last year, very glassy like, they were found into huge strates embedded into the bedrock of the desert, they encased pretty well with boro, only the effect isnt that good looking.. and i cant find the name of the rock itself...

if someone had some succesful or unsuccesfull result , would be great to hear 'em, might save trouble, and open path to new ideas... !!!

The asbestos is good for lung encasement. Once you encase it, its there for life.

I had never heard of silicium used as a name for silicon. Thanx!

You've got the answer right there in front of you. Just take a small piece of every kind of rock, drop it down a tube, and see what results you get. 90% crack the glass. 9% wont, but look horrible. And 1 will actually not crack and look decent. Then if you find one, ID it.

I've never heard of anyone trying it but I wonder if obsidian would work? Its basically natural glass, right?

eighths work better

I think you'd run into compatibility issues with the obsidian. I saw someone playing with some in a class once just on it's own and it seemed to not be going well. I should have paid closer attention.

ive encased a ruby and a herkimer before. both exploded into cloudy looking crap but didnt crack the glass. i suppose if they were better quality they might look a little less like crap....maybe better looking crap? but still crap.

i said crap 4 times, 5 now

You can encase herkimer diamonds and make them look cool they don't look the same as when you put them in they explode most times if you have a flawless small crystal it might only crack or it might come out whole the trick is to ramp them up nin the kiln seel of the end of e small diameter tube drop the crystal down it and slowly work the glass around it then ramp them down slow the more glass you use around it the more chance it will crack I use the small ones that are cloudy or have internal fractures any way it's not worth exploding a nice crystal.

I sell herkimers & other crystals so if anyone is interested drop me aline @ crystalninja7@yahoo.com

Most "natural" rocks, gemstones, whatever, either arent compatible or contain trace amounts of water. So the stone has to be mostly silica, and not have a water content. Thats why so few things work.

ah ha, that's a great explanation!

graphite is encasable ive seen the broken tip of a reamer encased.looked allright(just like the tip of a reamer in glass).maybe if you carved some small pieces into somrthing like little animals or robots and encased....................

You might try looking at pieces that you can use with art clay silver. The temperatures are similar, and it would save you some effort.

Its possible if its from morroco its 'desert glass'. Its this translusenct yellowish green natrual glass found out in the sahara. I think its mainly silica based, its been debated that a large meteor a million years ago caused it or some other natural diasaster.
