I have heard of people using fine grain silver and silver powder before. Would it be also possible to use things like silver oxide(Ag2O), silver nitrate(AgNO3), silver chloride(AgCl) or silver carbonate(Ag2CO3) to color the glass and possibly get different color reactions? I was on a search for silver powder and I came across them on this website (http://www.saltlakemetals.com/silver)
Anyone have any thoughts or input?

Yes, it is.

What are you trying to do?

I used to make all my own color and I used Silver Oxide a lot....still have a bunch and still mix up batches of my own colors when I have time. I also used one or two other forms os silver, but would have to rifle through a bunch of stuff to see which ones I used...I know Silver Carbonate is used a lot in color, too.

Thanks Koolglass. It sounds like this should actually work....the stuff on that website is pretty cheap so i might try a few different ones out. Other than good ventilation is there any other precautions I should take?

a few people use silver nitrate for getting fuming like effects.. and i've heard that it's nastier than just silver.. so be extra careful with venting.

i guess you shouldn't even hit silver nitrate with the flame.. or maybe just once.. make a solution with it.. deionized water or something.. paint it on .. dry in kiln.. encase.. or something =)

i remember when i was in school I mirrorized some peices of glass. I think i might have used silver nitrate and some sort of stop bath to do it. Im not totally sure/

take a ball of silver or a coin, put it in a small vise and file it over your graphite pad and you should have enough for a project.

mystic glass thanks, thats what ive been doing. I just thought that there was possibly a more economical way of doing it.
Janky-Thanks for the tip bro, ill search around some more.
Im hoping to be able to find uses for this that I can adapt to the lines of jewelry I make.(which use a lot of striking/silver colors in them) Ive been using the silver filings a bit, but Im hoping a range of new materials will give me some different effects. I know with the filings I made a little goes a real long way. It seems 50 grams would last me practially forever.

Another way to do it is to get a jar of cold water and place it under your flame then put silver in the flame above it and when the silver starts to melt it will fall in the water and cool down in little balls of silver. Then I just make a little spoon thing with a glass rod, put in some silver, and I'm ready to go.

I really like silver powder. Like mentioned above, I just file my own. It goes a long way. I like to roll cobalt tube in it and encase. Also for pendant backs. Play around with it, many cool effects.
