The Pipe CLassic II wrapped up last weekend. I just want to bring this event more to the attention of the community. This is the second year the Bern Gallery in Burlington VT have thrown this flame off competition, and i must say its awesome. Not only is it alot of fun, but i think it's a great way to celebrate the pipemaking scene and to educate people more about the process we go through to create these pieces. There are more "flame offs" happening these days, but this one i have special love for because it specifically involves pipes, as opposed to sweeping it under the carpet. This event is essential, because it takes an invisible, hidden culture and puts it out there in a very positive light. The Bern Gallery goes out of there way to accomodate the artists, and make it a special event for all participating.
!2 competitors are invited by the Bern Gallery and Pipe Classic Committee to compete. The general rules are that competitors have 12 hours total (two six hour shifts) to create a piece that must be some sort of functional pipe. There is no prep work of ANY kind allowed, everything must be created from raw materials, live, within the time alloted. Coldworking and mixed media is allowed, as long as it is accomplised in the time period. 100 judges passes are sold and everyone is invited to watch the pieces being made over the course of the week. The public then decides the winners. Otherwise, its a big celebration of pipemaking.
check out some pics from this year....

I drove up there for a few days in the middle of the week and it was awesome. Super positive environment. Plus marcel had the biggest GTT I have ever seen.

I am always blown away by the quality of the pipe shops in Burlington. They are set up like galleries. Something you don't really see here in Seattle. The Bern Gallery is especially nice with the in store glass blowing going on.
I was really surprised by the size of that Jedi peice. Much bigger in person than it looks in the GP gallery.

no marcel is using the new VIPER. its a lynx/delta/huge outer fire. bigger than a cobra, python, or mag.

wow... just to witness such an event would be an honor indeed... so much talent
in one place and each piece seemed to be in a class all it's own... someday, i'll
be able to make an event such as this so i can walk away in awe from the
experience like i'm sure many did from this one... Thank You slinger, for the thread...
