Hi Mike.

I say glass, my reason is I'd think it would feel colder than plastic, thus cooling/soothing the eye socket. :twitch:

that glass eye video was sooo cool. when i worked for a fishing guide we had a client who had lost an eye to a fish hook. he had a perfectly matching glass eye. he said it cost him $22,000 and was made by a guy in dallas.

Although he's London based, the accent sounds like southern German/Austrian.

I remember reading about an old boy in Australia two or three years ago that had the same concerns; when he was unable to work anymore making glass eyes, there was nobody interested in continuing the work. He said he used Lauscha glass.

Certainly seems like a fun business to be in. I gotta say though, watching that eye impression being done skeeved me out. I get a little squeemish about eye and knee stuff.

Weird. I never knew they were hollow. Guess it makes sense, though. I've just never seen or held one in person.

Thanks for posting the links - That glass eye video sure was cool! The plastic one was cool too, but...

i think the hollow forms were just the pieces before they have the back ground off of them. the one i saw and the finished ones in the video are just the front of the bubble, like a little convex shield-type shape.

They are not all hollow. I have a friend CJ with a glass eye and it turns out the maker lives here Gainesville and works at Shands Hospital. CJ's eye is solid glass and told me about the process. He needs to be refitted and I'm hoping to go in with him to check out the action. He's always asking me to make him a freaked out crazy eye but I'm sure you understand my reservations. I remember years ago a scavenger hunt where one of the big point items was a glass eye. We had a good time with that one.

That sounds right I was thinking the finished hollow form would be to big to fit.

I think if I had to have the prosthetic, and givin what I do now.... I would have to say glass, and they would have to be REALLY cool and freak people out~ Cuz, that would just be fun. =)

Ihere was a guy doing glass eye demos at the gas conference in aus. in 2005.heres a pic i took: http://www.glassartists.org/Img74248_eyeball_demo_Img74248_P5070152.asp I was fortunate enough to get a front row seat and got to ask him alot of questions. Making eyes is harder than it looks. You have to match up to the other one, and be just the right shape to fit in the socket. He said most of his clients lost their eyes in combat.
