i have an aim 99ls w/digital controller, when i turn it on the digital panel starts rising temp, then starts random readings, jumping numbers back & forth. would my controller be fried? or just need a new thermocouple?

I used to test smoke stacks for the E.P.A and we used thermalcouples to get a stack tempriture .When our meters started doing this there was usuallly a short in the thermalcouple wire where the plastic melted off the wire or a short where the wire went into the yellow plugs .I would start by checking the wire if there is no melted wire then unscrew the yellow connection boxes cut and strip the wire and reasssemble .If this does not work then I would say the resister in the digital pyrometer is going bad and will have to be replaced .
