View Full Version : my first piece hits the ground...
just spent almost an hour and a half making my first peice and just as i was getting done the blow tube broke and it hit the cement floor of my garage it was hard to watch but im not discouraged it was a great hour and a half im going to get some food in me and hit it again hopefully this time it goes a little better.
hey dude, good luck with it next time. Try making a piece that you intend to destroy; it's kind of fun.

i hate when that happens to me, maybe once a year i will drop some thing good on the flore while still working on it, you just got to chuckle over it and move on and on and on and on..........

If you are learning alone, you may end up with lots o' broken shit. Hell I still always crack at least one piece every few weeks, sometimes I go months.
Here is a photo in about 2000 or so of my broken pieces, I have posted this a long time ago and I actually have a third bucket going.
I fuse them into stuff now so my collection is dwindling, but this will let you know what you might be in for, though I learn pretty slow, so, then again you may not break so many as my dumb ass...

I don,t have any photos, but I fuse the pieces into large panels now, then use sterling silver wiring to attatch them together and put that on a wooden base with a switch and a bulb wired in, then I blow a dome that is fit to cover the light inside and sticks out the top carrying the light with it. It,s like an Oriental looking glowing triangle of pipe-wrecks sitting on a wooden base with silver wire-wrapping lacing up the corners and a brand new glass Pheonix rising from the ashes. The Omega point.
Don,t know if that made any sense but they are pretty killer, kind of multi-media. You just gotta learn to deal with the devit that,s all...They also need to be kind of glued together on the inside with a concoction I am still working on (trying to copy Chihulis' recipe) to keep them from being so fragile as they are boro cold seals in effect so they are weak by themselves (I know it,s cheating but Chihuly makes dough off of just having that formula so he can safely do large ceiling installations, so WTF right?)...

got a picture Rex? I have enough frustration keeping devit off of my bullseye to try it with boro, but I'd love to see a photo of one of those lamps.

Hey,
Naw, no photos. soon on my art site I will have some.
Just to avoid confusion...This is Bird. My websites are http://www.rexwerx.com (old school pipes) and http://www.daysbetweenworkshop.com (wood, clay, glass, art, etc...) I know Rex through emails and stuff and he,s a cool guy, but he can play the sax way better than I can. :D

What are these "Cracks" you speak of?
just spent almost an hour and a half making my first peice and just as i was getting done the blow tube broke and it hit the cement floor of my garage it was hard to watch but im not discouraged it was a great hour and a half im going to get some food in me and hit it again hopefully this time it goes a little better.
Yeah everytime you lose a piece it gets a little easier to shrug it off and just get started on a new one. It still hurts looking at the shards though...

bah, I made my first mid sized tube yesterday. everything went smoothly. I flattened teh bottom slightly tipsy but everything was good. I was done and went to take the cold seal off the bottom of the finishied piece. only to find it laying in 3 peices inside my kiln. qq. the flat spot was too much thicker then the rest, slight detrification around the edges, and a crack orginating from the cold seal, that was a pretty hot cold seal. i figured I could wield the peices back together and use it for myself or a friend, then it decides to jump onto the floor and finish it's self-destruction process. oh well
