different instance but, same thought pattern...

every so often, i get someone in california or there abouts,
messaging me on myspace, asking me to do i/o prodo work...

a. if they are in cali and they are a real distributer, how or, why would they
want my junk ass glass... seems as thou, they could find much better prodo,
without having it shipped in, beings how the west coast has the larger community
of lamp workers...:puzzled:

b. i don't sell through myspace, nor do i post as if i want to sell anything through
my myspace page...

c. my point is, i believe that some of this kind of thing is just fishing for suckers
that are easily enticed into trouble of their own making...

:chilling::chilling:

Beleave it or not cali has janky glass blowers, and many of the really good blowers wont do prodo. ( or at least cheap prodo) Im not saying that some of the emails you get are not BS. ( and I havent seen your glass so I dont know
how "junk ass" it is ( your words not mine)) But rest assured there are MANY shops in cali that need american prodo.

wow mindblowing, thats a boost to my wish to travel... i'm kinda stuck for a minute... anyway, i don't like making any pipes here... plane and simple...
it is all gray area here because they sit in most every tobacco shop, tattoo shop,
corner convenience store, openly for sale... but as i understand it, i would be in deep shit for supplying them, if they want to take me down, depending on my attitude...

i was under the impression that, to live on the west coast, i would be paying
an outrageous amount for o2, a premium on propane, coast of living is
astronomical, as well as, being faced with at least one other glass blower
living in my same neighbor hood, no matter where i live... :puzzled:
if any of the is untrue, i'll understand because, it is just what i've been
lead to believe from word of mouth... :shifty:

im in oregon;

-o2 is reasonable, $15-$20/ k-tank
-normal size propane tank is $12
-other glassblowers are more of an asset than a liability, we have two glass supply stores in town, a school and a large lampworking community.
-less competition from imports out here
-lots of distributers to sell to

the west ain't so bad.

From what I've read on the board, west coast O2 is comparable to other areas(I pay $13 for a K bottle, $160 plus blah, blah, blah for a 240 liter dewar of liquid). I pay just over $50 after tax to buy 20 gallons of propane (just over $2.50 per gallon).

Cost of living varies greatly on the west coast (SF is ridiculous, LA steep, Oregon relatively inexpensive as are select regions of NorCal). Glassblower populations vary widely, but there always seems to be work for those that pursue it. The west coast encompasses a HUGE area...your mileage may vary depending on exact location.

So cal is way worse than north cali. I know towns in north cali that have NO blowers ( but have no shops as well) I beleaved the hype as well for many years. There are spots in nor cal that are not to pricey to live in ( as long as you can handle the rural lifestyle.)

But they have more shops in cali than any other state.

The medical thing helps boost the market intensly.
As well almost anyone with the money to see a DR, can get a prescription
(if your a smoker)

wow, thanks to you all for that... i some friends that just moved to nor-cali
into a rural setting and i may join them...

I am pretty new and I have only sold 3-4 cases most of that being pendants. So this hasn't applied to pipes for me yet.

But I have had better luck so far in walking into a store that doesnt sell glass at all and selling a whole case of glass just on the "ooh you made them yourself?!?!" factor.

I have sold some to shops that do sell glass, but they tend to pick and choose the pieces they think will sell and leave the rest. And I dont get why they never seem to pick the ones I am most proud of.

Wait wasn't this thread about ebay or something?
