I want to make some salt and pepper shakers but i am not too sure what the thread pitch and diameter is that most people use. Has anyone ever ordered any before?

i just use rubber gromets on the bottom of them.

rubber gromets are an improvement on the small corks I use.

So.... Been thinking of cool way to make these...Imagine a small jar with a small corked and grommet hole on top. Turn at iver and foot it so the cork/grommet hole is on the bottom. Use a larger tungsten pick to make holes for the pepper and a smaller size for salt. Seems easy and no threading. Now any bub/hammer can/jar ideas become functuional s&p shakers. If anyone does this before I get to it let me know if it works....

"threadless shakers"
i was told this is.. "ancient technology" so.. i guess it's ok for me to say.. (jess, if ya want this gone, i'll edit)
so a buddy does shakers something like this:
make a vessel that looks like this (=< meaning the top is rounded, there are sidewalls, and then there is a cone pushed up into the middle of the vessel. make a hole in the tip of the cone.
so, now you can pour salt into the little hole, then turn it upsidedown, and no salt should come out. shake, and salt will come out the hole.
different forms will make these function more efficiently (narrow walls, tapered to more of a point, smaller gap between hole and top.. i'm just theororizing here)
anyway, there ya go. =)

heh, cool ideas....
I've throught about how to do this with a graphite blow mold for the threads... also if you have access to a lathe you could maybe run a rod on and get the spacing just right and make a threaded tube?
The biggest problem I've come across is: Where do you buy just the metal tops?
I can buy bulk glass S/P shakers for restraunt style stuff for like $3 a whole pair, but that seems steep to just toss the glass for the metal.
Anyone got a source for just the tops?

You can buy the threads from any scientific glassblowing manufacture. The sizes I use are GL 14 or GL 18 the thread patterns are international.
All you have to do now is find a manufacture to supply the metal tops
I have made the threadless shakers it's a clasic and works well

Does anyone know of a company that makes both the pyrex thread and metal cap to fit it?

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but this is a neat topic. I'm curious about threading glass because I have a friend who wants a run of nail polish bottles made. Anyone know specific scientific suppliers who sell threaded glass. Any help is much appreciated, and in the meantime I'll keep searching away,

Thanks, Ace glass seems to be the best looking option. Also, I found this article, pretty neat bit about industrial processes for shaping/cutting threads in glass.

If I don't have the premade thread size needed I just use a piece of 2mm rod and draw the thread on, it's cake...
Someone on here was recently selling some threaded blowtubes and threaded vials....
