I am looking for some really nice cord for my pendants that is beyond the normal coloured cord you would get at a bead shop. I am even cool with learning to make my own. I just want to be able to offer something that looks unique, like some sort of woven or braided hemp.

Any sources or recommended books on making such ?

Look up hemp braiding on google.

Its really easy, basically two patterns, which is the same knot over and over.

Yeah, those cords like in Sarah's pictures are Chinese made and when you buy in quantity, like large quantities, they are only about $4 a piece for the nice double ones. I get mine from McDuck Creations- http://mcduckcreations.com/miscellaneous.htm she makes it easy to buy wholesale.

Also, there are a couple of nice books out by Suzen Millodot, Search Press: Chinese Knots for Beaded Jewelry. It has some decent designs for using with pendants, and are not hard to make. Simple, but much better looking than just a soft cord with a square knot in the end. The other book is Celtic Knots. I bought some satin cording to make some cords for pendants, something different than the Chinese cords from Mary McDuck.

If you run into a problem getting the cords Meerkat, let me know. I would be willing to get a bunch together and mail them to you. Okay?

Finger weaving is a cool way to make awesome looking cord and it goes faster than alot of other braiding/hemping. Its the thing where you have loops hooked around all your fingers and you do some crazy stuff and it turns into a cool necklace. Maybe some genius somewhere figured out how to explain it online. Im pretty sure its called finger weaving if anyone wants to google it.

You mean like that spool knitting stuff? I think those are viking chains but don't quote me on that.

My SIL made one for me like that, on her fingers. It is a lot like crochet I think... I'll ask her about it.

Cool thanks for all the links, they were not exactly what I was looking for, I was lookign for something a little more hippy, but I think with that one braiding link I could make my own.

Julz I am *very* interested in the ones at mcduck called single thread and double thread. I wonder if it would be possible to get a sample pack of all the ones they make so I could choose what I like. I also wonder if there is a place in Australia that sells such things, there must be as there is tons of chineese import stuff here.

The prices seem kind of odd at the mcduck site though, why would that popcorn necklace which looks like cheap braided nylon cost $10 or more where as the really nice looking double threaded necklaces with multiple celtic-ish knots in them is only $6 ???

Here is a current buy going on at LE. I hope it's okay to share. I've bought from McDuck a few times and she's wonderful, been around for a long time, honest, blah, blah, blah.

The popcorn necklaces are sterling silver.

I am going to Chi this weekend, so maybe I can pick up an assortment from Mary for you Dondi. I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh cool, I had no idea they were silver, it didn't say on the web page and they looked like white nylon. I am very interested in all the styles she has then.
