So cold I put down the carbide cutter, whipped off my shirt and cut the tubing with my nipples!
Actually I haven't been outside yet. Working from home in my PJs. Though the thermometer says it's 35 out there and it's snowing.

42 degrees and being sick doesn't help. but for the first time in my glass career i am backed up with orders i can barely keep up with from everyone coming home for thanksgiving break. feels good but it is also a lot of pressure trying to keep everyone happy

-10C warmest day in the last couple of weeks - I fire up the heating and kiln, let it run for about 45 minutes, then it gets to about 25c at head level, but the concrete floor still stays cold :(

this evening, is about like it's been for a while, and at dark (5:00pm)
it is 70-F... if i had made the move out west, i would be hating it because,
it's 34-F and feeling like 24-F in Yoder, CO...
i have always loved this time of the year here in n.w. florida...
up till about january, it's great... and it's back to nice about april...
i just can't take the heat like i used to but, that don't mean that i
don't still hate the cold...!!! :chilling: i'm better now that i got that out...
Man I need to move to florida or cali.
These days I miss the back room of the head shop I used to blow glass at. The furnace was in the same room and it was nice and toasty.

any one who has a wood stove in thier shop. does it work good or does it just go out the ventalation I'm fuckin cold and it's not even below 40. must find some heat brrrrrrr....
Greymatter Glass
11-21-2007, 12:28 PM
still in the mid 60's here... should be mid 30s
Woodstoves do not work well in glass studios. The ventilation sucks the smoke out of the stove if close enough, or generally messes with how it vents.
A friend had good sucess with a electric pellet stove though, as these are blower driven, and don't depend on the updraft like traditional woodstoves.
Not to hijack, but I would like to know how people deal with wintertime heating issues. Also, what is a decent ventilation for the lampworker who doesn't fume (much)? Milon says in his book that running no ventilation while working and then just clicking the fans on for a minute every 20 minutes of working is acceptable... don't know if I trust that though.
Oh yeah, its 17 deg. and snowing at 8236 ft.
I have one of those electric space heaters. As long as Im in between the heater and my torch Im ok.

I'm so lucky this year. We moved and now I have space and heat. It does get cold after torching a few hours, because I turn off the heat and open up windows for intake air. But to start warm is soooo wonderful.

I wear warm clothes, hat, gloves with the fingers cut off and have a space heater. I still get really cold and have to take breaks to warm up. If you start shivering, you waited too long.

don't they have airtight stoves that draw air from outside this would probably work in a glass shop

I take it that your studios are separated from the main house everyone?

yup, 10x12 shed with cement board. I've got insulation in the walls to help buffer the wind but it's still chilly out there. I'm slowly working on insulating the roof.
Got a new radiant heater yesterday to replace the POS that wouldn't start up, but I threw out my back yesterday so I don't know that I'll be out there this evening. I have a massage scheduled during the same time :D

we had almost 2 foot of snow the other night (1 night) . and it was warmer than what we had right before it.
No thermo so no clue as to temp , except the rabbits water froze and with the torch going and sittin in front of the heater I could see my breath even before I decided I should turn the fan on ( had the G-door cracked three inches or so doing small prep, kids never try this at home) .
Moral :I need no thermo to tell me its too damn cold.

yesterday, kiln said it was 22,
last week when the kiln said it was in the mid 30's I got it to 49ish, not too cold, but then I do dress really warm, lots of wool layers and dodwn filled hunting booties. that really helps my feet stay warm, really clumsy though, gotta watch every step.
Damn, it around -20*Celsius in here since a while and we already got more than a FUC*** meter of snow already... the last 50cm. storm oof last week was bad....
damn its cold in here , it take a good 1½ to heat up the shop before working.... and it sucks... Cauz as soon as you start the torch and the Fan u loose all ur heat...
Im thinking about adding a second layer of concrete to the flloor wich would be HEATED with tubing running in hot water.
I HATE COLD FEET and a COLD Shop..!!! arrghhgrg,kt"$&%?

Cold enough that my chinese digi controller was showing EEEE on the screen when I turned it on.
I thought the damn thing was broke,Dug out the manual and found that it means temp out of range.:bangHead: live and learn.
Internet says its 19f here now...no clue what the temp was 2 hours ago before the sun came up.
Its about 72 here, supposed to be around 80 by the end of the week. 45-50 at night. Guess I don't have much to complain about. :D

I'd rather be warm then cold myself... I've got a pool in the backyard to jump into if I overheat... not to mention that if I travel in any direction for a short time, I'll hit nice beautiful blue ocean...
I'll take that over preheating my car in the morning, and shoveling snow anyday!!!
I do like hte snow and cold, I just couldn't live like that.... Not bad for a vacation though...
