Pipes are fun, making them for me and my friends is awesome, but the shops really try to rip me off so it's direct to retail by word of mouth only. My real money comes from jewelery, Like earrings, pendants, right now I'm selling a ton of ornaments, one's that take only 10-15 minutes and I am getting 15$ wholesale on them, 25$-30$ retail. In short.... I love making pipes, but the housewife market tends to be a little looser with thier pocketbooks if you know what I mean.

oh yeah, and 5" latty icicles are flying out the door right now too @ 5$ a piece
Yeppers! Playing with hot glass is just fun and cool, no matter what you're making. I'd do a lot more sculpting work if I had a market for it but since right now (at least for me) its only pipes that pay, thats what i do 95% of the time. There is plenty of room for creativity and originality, and it is always challenging, so to me thats good fun. No matter how you look at it, it sure beats a McJob.

Pipes were the reason I got into glass, but like Teaspoon I find I can get more of a return on other stuff. I still love makin em though.

pipes are great to develope your skills, learn new techniques and develop your own style. i really enjoy making the pipes ranging from 50-300$ they seem to work best for me.
i also like making new things trying things ive never done before and collaboration.
im just not sure wheres the right place to market my jewlery, the only place ive sold em so far was one local craft shop and at the summer music festivals.. also the christmas craft fairs..
recently delved into the sex toys. lots of fun times to be had.

i love making pipes mainly b/c it is functional art.
i am not really a drinker so one day i will get into goblets... but for now i am happy w/ pipes n' beads.
i do hope to make pipes for ever, eventually make goblets / other vessels and in the long run just make as much different stuff as possible.

:bangHead::o:pipes suck!
pipes pay rent and it's always fun to play with glass but once you've made over 10,000 of anything you really don't think about it as much of an adventure anymore. still, it keeps your hands warm so that you're ready when it's time to do more interesting work.

I don't make nearly as many as I used to make. With my work schedule I can't go out to the shops and try to sell them, and the only shop in town only buys imports these days. I may make one or two a month now as requests for friends, but that's it.

I voted "part time" but I am a fulltime glassworker. Pipes help pay the bills inbetween lampworking events for me. Plus, I learned a lot about color working pipes, which has improved my colored lampwork. I used to only do clear lampwork, so I gotta thank pipes for the use of colors. I dont do a lot of the techy coloring (i.e. wigwag reball tube pulls) just a lot of solids, stripes and organic mixes of colors.

If I may ask... why are you trying to transition to more not pipe stuff???

would you make more pipes if selling them was easier??? would make only pipes if selling them was no prob at all??
Thanks y'all... keep em coming i'm very interested!

I am a full time pipe maker. I have a part time job also. I spend at least 95% of my time making pipes under $20.00. I puff tough but have always preferred to roll a phatty instead of using glass. I always say I would love to not be a pipemaker for the rest of my life, but i have been wondering lately. I have no backstock of cheap crap. Only nicer pieces sit around (in my cases and at stores). So, it's time to make another $8 bill (I mean $8 pipe).
:D:D:D
I recently quit my full time job, so I fear if I stop making pipes I might not make rent. Good thing I still enjoy it. I try to somewhat satisfy my creative urges with prodo (no offense, but $8 pipes ain't no fun), but if I didn't stretch out at least once a week I'd go crazy. Also, a functional piece is like a safety net for me, it helps keep a modicum of focus. (If it didn't have to have a bowl and a mouthpiece I would spend ten times the amount of time deciding what the piece would look like, ya know?)
I mostly make pipes but I make alot of other stuff too. I like to make pipes but they present certain obstacles mostly related to their legal status. So while I love making the very objects themselves I don't like having to deal with selling them which highly motivates me to make more and more non-pipe items lately. So to answer your question I like making pipes but I don't like selling them. That doesn't stop me from pretty much making my living from them though.

have been a pipemaker for 3 years now and have loved every minute of it. i have to attribute alot of my skill in glass to pipes. as of now i want to concentrate on other techniques to further my understanding of glass and form.

I don't like doing the sales much either, so I give someone else 20% to beat the streets for me and handle all that, plus he comes to pick up the glass and bring propane so I really never even need to leave the shop. I think the extra time I get for working makes up for what I "lose" by paying him, and since I currently don't have a license or a vehicle getting to all the shops around town would just be a huge pain.

In selling pipes to shops, are the owners usually pretty receptive of your prodo work or do you typically have to "Front" a few pcs to them first in order to establish a relationship?
Are craft markets usually pretty receptive of your products or do you have to sneak them in and front your display with other work?
I am just starting to pursue the craft, but I'm curious as to what the future may hold for me and the challenges that lay ahead. Any input is greatly appreciated. Sorry, didn't vote because I have yet to turn out a pc.

me too... if i'm blowing glass, 95% of the time, it's a pipe and 80% of the pipes i make are sold for about $8 hole sale or $10-15 direct sales... my part time job
is one day a week, where i deliver about 5000 news papers to about 50
different stops... that job has provided several hole sale customers and covers
my monthly auto insurance...

wow, nicely said and i would have to agree and say that i feel the same...
never front pipes.
word up...
word to that. i never have and i never will.
double word...
it's a love/hate relationship...
things are upside down for me right now... for more than several months now,
i have been working with a friend doing carpentry work and painting, trying to get back on my feet... it is fucking killing me physically because, it's more than i can handle and way more than i'm supposed to be doing but, without having any help in my house hold, i have to either do it or, just give up... i have been saying, if i can only make it, two or, three more weeks, and i'l be able to go back to just blowing glass and doing my pout once a week... but, if i have been thinking a lot of the what if lately so, i may be having one hell of a yard sale very soon...
i started making glass pipes as a means to an end... i want to go into much bigger sculpting in a hot shop environment... but, i have smoked for almost 30 years now and i have made almost every pipe i have used in that time, from may different materials along the way... so i don't see a day when i will stop liking to make them but, i also don't see a day where i can openly make them and sell them either...

The shop we have here in town is pretty good size. Thay have a ton of glass and everything else that goes along with that "Hobby". Last time I was in there though they said the cops haven't bothered them a bit. He also mentioned that they always make a point of sharing with the local police association though too.
Imagine that... Follow the dollar!
Thanks for the input.

I love making pipes. It seems that it is alot easier for some reason for me to be creative when making pipes rather than anything else. Everything just seems to flow and fall into place alot easier when I make pipes.

Actually... One of your boys and I were talking and he insisted that most pipemakers don't like making pipes. However, most pipe makers I know love making pipes so I was curious what the general temperature of the community might be... And it's been interesting to see.
And no... I'm not making pipes... not now anyway. Don't you know I have a bead show around the corner? My work has two holes right now... And it was great hanging with you! We'll do it again for real... soon.

for me, pipes are the most fun to make right now. Nothing else calls to me like pipes do.
I have yet to sell a single one, although I have given away many of what I considered my best pieces at the time they were made...

Pipes are what i seem to excell at and get the most enjoyment out of making. I moved to southern Louisiana from Oregon a yr. ago, the only glass here is cheap India glass so I get top dollar for simple fumies.

I like making pipes. It does get boring making the same thing, so you do have to mix it up a bit.
Lately I've been making a ton of jewelry. I don't really sell to stores anymore. They just play the fucking lowball game and I'm sick of it. Friends and family can bring a lot of business. I always wear a piece of my jewelry and more often than not, have a case of glass with me wherever I go. This ensures that I can make a sale at any time.

Well Dan I think a lot of us have worked production work, but do not really like to. I mean do any of us really like making 100 or even a thousand slides, nothing special just clear glass and a little fume on the inside. Most of us were not born with the innate ability to blow glass, these things we do as stepping stones to hopefully more intricate work. I can understand techniques, but if I can not execute them then what good are they? These repetitive task of prodo bats, slides, and pipes teach things like reading the glass and muscle movements. These are crucial elements in glass working no matter what you do. There are some things that your body must learn to be successful, prodo just happens to be one of those things you can make out of glass that can easily be sold ..........
I have a glass store and do not sell any pipes....I have been working solid for years.... that being said....
I LOVE making pipes , back in 1998 i did nothing but ... now I only make them for friends and myself...... BUT for the last few months I have been playing with Chris & Matt's color tube ....I can't even make this stuff look bad , lol ..... getting back into tube work ..... and LOVE IT !!!!!
I think I may need to go live with whale boner ( BRIDGE-IT ) and get my groove back !!!! Got room for me BRIDGE !!!!
