that looks neat. any chance gldg members get a discount? :D
Michael
12-11-2007, 08:59 PM
Hell yea, how about free shipping so $40. Wish I could go really cheap for you guys but these are a huge pain in the ass working with high carbon steel. I've been using a much better brand of plyers than the ones pictured, they look the same just harder to make. They are slip joint so ones for 9.5 and the other works for 12mm. Thanks for any feedback- Mike
Looks like a good idea, I'd be interested to know how they compare to this type http://cgi.ebay.com/Glass-Tubing-Cutter-w-Replaceable-Blade-Tube-Pyrex_W0QQitemZ200183136152QQihZ010QQcategoryZ2641 9QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Is the blade replaceable?
PyroChixRock
12-11-2007, 09:02 PM
i can tell from the pics that the ones he posted cut tiny pieces off, which the other type doesn't do easily. can you explain about that at all, mike? thanks :D
Michael
12-11-2007, 09:03 PM
I've never used that type but the thing I like about these is that the second cut out allows you to hold the part being snapped off. Do those hold the glass as you snap? I'm not being a smartass I've just never used them.
PyroChixRock
12-11-2007, 09:04 PM
ahh so that's how. this is something we could all have around the shop. for sure! thanks for posting it. i want to pick one up, i'll hit you up soonish. :D
Michael
12-11-2007, 09:04 PM
I should admit those aren't scribe & snap they are scribe, spit & snap.
Michael
12-11-2007, 09:25 PM
Yea Nemesis, the blade is replaceable 7/64 allen screw. I did sell a few pair w/ a compersion pin. If anyone from here got one of those p.m. me

12-11-2007, 09:26 PM
do they cut millies cleanly, you have pics of some milies that you've cut with this tool.
Michael
12-11-2007, 09:46 PM
They do cut millies but not the "chip" method. You can scribe all the way around very lightly & grab that tiny chip and snap it off. I have better luck this way. I can get the same size slices for reptile eyes or whatever.
i was interested in cutting murrine too. how thin can you cut wafers? do they come out consistantly clean or do you get some funky breaks like with nippers? assuming that the murrine is all good that is.

Ooooh, I HATE that other kind. This new kind looks nice with the handles. That other (old) kind always slips around on the tubing when you're scoring...

12-11-2007, 10:05 PM
Well I wish I could say they all come out 100%. Really thin slices are still hit of miss at this point, I'd say it does pretty well w/ 4 mm or longer. I don't know how to post any pics or should I find the url of a image when its in my documents or I'd toss in some milli pics.
Interesting. I've been shopping for a new tubing cutter. Any chance of being able to make one that cuts 1" tube?
Michael
12-11-2007, 10:22 PM
I have made some that cut larger tubing very well. Nice connection on the scores. Thermal shock and bam-just like factory. I'll try & learn the whole pic postin thing.
cool . i think I might have to pick up one.

12-12-2007, 05:36 AM
Definitely interested in one for the larger tube (25mm and up). For the smaller stuff I don't get too much damage just scoring normally. My main problem is not spiraling my score line.
Very cool though.
Michael

I'll get some pics up of the large version soon.
Thanks, Mike-

Just wanted to add, ( not that we're concerned about active forum members, rather possible lurkers that aren't good people) This tool design is patent pending. ( provisional patent obtained) , Patent applied for, and international patent application to be submitted in the next couple days ( assuming there are no more delays)
- To all you distributors, We will be contacting you once these are in full production. ( which will be real soon)
As well, the larger size models will be available real soon.
( Also- to build the excitement a little, we will be releasing a full line of high end glass blowing tools soon ( the nicest tools you have ever seen!!!!))

Cool, looks like a very efficient tool. Would make slides and blow tubes a snap. I'm gonna have to grab one.
Can you make one that is ajustable, like for multiple sizes or is it each tool has a specific size that it works for only. Chanel locks or somthing?
Would the ones for 9.5 work just as well for 12 mil? I want to grab the ones you have on ebay, but I really don't want to have to buy a bunch of differant sizes of them as I use 9 and 12 the same amount.
Scott
Michael
12-12-2007, 11:03 PM
Thanks for asking Scott, I thought I had covered that but I guess not. They are slip joint plyers and one position will work for 6-10 & slipped open 11-14 (round about). Its not the scribing that is affected so much by the position but the second cut out for holding as you snap gets a little touchy w/ a wide range of sizes. The other designs I'm just dressin the look up a little right now but yes they are adjustable.
I was offering free shipping to the members here so p.m. me.

That actually looks like a useable alternitive to the diecast ones that look like a dollar store stapler.
It looks well made and the design looks like it adhears to the K.I.S.S rule.
Nice.

I just got a set of Mike’s tools, and I have to say that they are absolutely incredible… perfect scores and clean breaks every time.
In addition to that, they are built to last a lifetime and much attention is given to the quality of the welds and overall appearance... there's nothing ghetto about them.
Hey- everybody wants good tools, good prices, and to support Americans. There’s 3 reasons right there to place an order with Mike.
I will have my set available for people to use at AGI if you haven’t ordered by then, and you’ll see for yourself that these things are the bomb!
Thanks Mike… you have a great thing going, and I can’t thank you enough for making these available : )
Sincerely,
Tom Doner
P.S.- If there was anything I could change about these cutters, it would be the cost. For what you’re getting, they’re under priced in my opinion.

I agree completely. I only got the smaller cutter not the set but WOW I have to say this is a must have tool if you spend more than a few seconds cleaning the ends of blow tubes. My set came with the rubber grommet pieces behind the scoring wheel, they work very well. Thanks again Mike!

So Mike has had his nose to the grindstone and through much trial and error,
has redesigned the larger ones to now score up to 80mm+ tube.( but still score 40 and 50mm tubes with no problem.)
The price for the new redesigned larger ones is $75 but will run a special to all forum members for only $60. ( as well, will still do a package deal for both large and small ( pm for price))
These are a MUST have for all tube makers or for anyone that uses large tube!!!! I use to use a diamond saw to cut down my tubes and I cant stress enough how much time (and money) this tool will save you. (as I use to go through diamond blades rather quickly)
The few people that have seen/used these new ones(and the old versions for that matter), all agree, these tools are worth every penny ( and then some)
If you don't have a pair of the small ( or large ones) your shop is not complete!
Either Mike, or I, will post pics of the new redesigned larger ones in the next day or so.
Just figuring out how to make the tool so it would accommodate such a variety of sizes was no easy task, but to come up with a design that would do that, and still fall in the parameters of the international patent application that was submitted, well lets just say there is a very large chunk of time(and money) wrapped up in this tool and its design (not to mention the small mint the patent attorney charged)
I will be the first to say, all his hard work has paid off!!!! ! Don't just take my word for it, pick up a pair and see for yourself. You'll wonder how you ever got by without them

I wanted to say I enjoy the heck out of mine. I received them asap. I got the smaller ones. They work great for 9.5mm 10, and 12mm. Thanks alot.
Got mine today...
....they work super awsome.
Im really liking the bigger ones. I really like the fact that instead of flame cutting sleves for my stick stacks ( or using end peices ), I can score and break them perfectly which allows the rods to get in there more snug + there is no thermal shock to worry about.
...the small ones work great for 9-12mm with closed ends- no more useless 4" peices to worry about.:D

02-14-2008, 11:52 PM
hey vinE, can you cold snap heavy wall bigger tube with these? i didnt think they were getting deep enough so i have been using them to score before cracking with a hot rod.....would love to be able to cold break bigger shit. any tips?
Doing it on standard wall not heavy.
maybe mine are new and sharp. I just put a little extra pressure on it and, pop! Clean break.
Im sad tho...
....the small one I got didn't come with the rubber gromet.
Michael
02-15-2008, 12:18 PM
Sorry- the ones that n3rd has were a test pair, they're the only pair out there. After I made those I realized I couldn't justify putting in an hour & 1/2 for $11 profit. It really is alot of extra work to put those on there. What I have done (but prefer them without it) is take some adhesive backed heat shrink tube and slip it over the holding portion of the jaws for a softer grip. The tube is for marine applications, feel free to contact me if you can't find any. Mike-
cool thanks for the 411.
imo you should spend the extra time, and add the gromet,
charge more for em.
once people start seeing them in use, they will gladly pay you for what they are worth.
They really are nice tools. I would gladly pay $40-65 for the small ones ($125-150 for the biggins) if i had seen them in a shop.
Michael
02-15-2008, 02:51 PM
I'm really glad everyone has a place for these in there shop. The feedback is great, thanks guys-
As far as the rubber jawed small scribe, I would be willing to make them for $45 if anyones interisted. And for the large standard pairs, I'll only be making the latest improved sets from now on. (15mm-80mm) They handle tube much easier & have wider capabilities.
Also anyone that has the original sets thats wants to upgrade, contact me-
All The Best,
Mike-
I don't need one yet but I was wondering if replacement cutting wheels are available, and if so how much?
Michael
02-15-2008, 04:03 PM
Yes they are available-$5 I'm waiting on a quote from a diffrent supplier, hopefuly a little cheaper. Mike-
Leebob
02-16-2008, 10:16 AM
yea I will be pming you shortly about a replacement wheel. Me and My friend both use the shit out of them . So I'm sure they will be dull in no time. Not that you really need them to be super sharp. Because you just need to score the tube a little. But the extra sharpness can only help.

I would like to order a set.
Michael
02-18-2008, 09:31 AM
Pic of the new set. Same design made larger & thicker with a 80mm capacity. With a range this wide cutting 40-50mm is a snap.
The rod & blowtube scribe is pictured w/ the rubber jaws. In addition to being easier on the glass because of the soft grip it allows for wider range of sizes to be held tightly when snapping. 5-15mm.
Small scribe w/ the rubber jaws - $45
Large scribe w/ 80mm capacity- $60
All The Best,

hey mike, how do you get such clean sections? i have been scoring large tube with these and snapping with a hot rod, but despite the super clean score alot of them are coming out a bit jagged and stressed.
Michael
02-18-2008, 10:00 AM
I'm sure that there are alot of variables but what I've been doing on really thick large tubing is lightly thermal shocking in a few places around the tube instead of going for one really hot large shock then tapping if needed. Hope this helps-

Ok, so i got a set of these and am absolutely stoked. These kick so much ass. THANK YOU MICHAEL! i knew the big pair was gonna be a big improvement over the scoring knife, but the frequency with which i use the little pair amazes me.
i don't know how the hell i got along using my disk nips for so long....i'm half tempted to throw the damn things away ;)
and the big pair? you can break a case of 38x4 down into half sticks in lass than 5 minutes, easy. less than 2, prolly, if you're trying.
and if an absolutely perfect edge isn't necessary, i haven't even had to heat shock 50x2.5, just score and pull apart while snapping it over your knee....if it had to be clean, a heat shock in a few places with a hot rod or small butane/propane torch and it pops off leaving a sharp edge.
if you don't have these, you want them.
thanks again man, best tools i've bought in at least a year.

I just got some heavy use out of these and holy crap am I glad I bought them. I just revamped my glass storage and had to cut my color rods in half. The small cutter made quick work of it, often doing *too* good of a job as it cut the rod in half like scissors. I have a set of 25x4 that I need to cut in half too and I did a couple to see if the cut/shock method would work quickly and I was thrilled! I've been getting a lot of shatter mess scoring and bashing the tube in half and this was zero damage and almost no tooth. Worth every single penny!

Both of these tools are amazingly useful.
You know when you buy a tool you think you will use a lot and you end up not using it much, even if you are still stoked you have it?
This tool is nothing like that. I literally use my small tool 20 times a day at the least. It has taken the place of my scoring tool in so many instances. Thank you so much. My girlfriend got it for me for Christmas (I knew I was getting it and was so excited open each present not knowing if it was the tool or not, so that I could see the tool).
If you don't have one, you will be stoked!!!

It's great to hear how well these are working out for everyone! I know it's a pain to contact me so I'm pleased to announce that Vapor Glass & Generations will have them in stock soon. I might not be as easily reached in the future, so please check with them first. Thanks to anyone that has helped the idea along & to everyone for their support!!

I used the bigger one the other day to score a line around some 1.25" Schott rod before thermal shocking it to cut, and it was a clean clean break.
Worth the dough folks.
Wow, here's someone who must REALLY value your tools. Check this auction, he's got a used small cutter listed as worth $110, and the big one at $475! Yikes! Says they're listed for what he paid (yeah sure).

LOL, thats ebay for ya. The cradle burners are nice, but whats up with the CC+ looking torch + no valves? Meant for lathe? Then there's the ammo box foot controller. New? My ass, the pedal looks like it was being used in a jungle, watch out for trench foot. I dunno, at a glance it looks like maybe a good deal in a package for a lathe worker, but the auction seems awfully sketch.

Michael... are you home yet?
Kt I will be getting a the larger model from Gen. I just love the way it breaks down the 32- ? mm I don't know how large they go but I have scored and popped 50 med like it was 9.5 tube. When you learn to use these tools just right the speed and cuts are clean as can be. I know there are some fine wet saw blades but then there is the clean up and extra time.
If you do lots of cold prep for sleeves tube pulls or just like breaking down stuff ahead of time this tool is for you.

Mike has not quite the tool, infact he has improved it and has means to mass produce. He built a foundry to cast and make his own metals and has a 6 axis cnc machine programed to crank them out.
Buy the knock offs but you'll be buying this 2 months later. We lost a good friend(real good friend of mikes) and he's been busy w the holidays, but the new and improved version will be avaliable soon.

for the record, i have kristian's tool and its great. i wouldn't call it a knock off, imo they are two different tools and i want a jaws too bc i am a tool whore.
...who would have thought that you could manufacture a "knock off" pair of pliers? is nothing sacred anymore? i wonder if griffin and rockit are crying about knock off foot pedals?
supelworld has gaydar and the worlds most precision punties so just be glad he even spoke. and never offer any other punty than a supelworld punty, otherwise its not only a knock off but trademark/copyright infringement. this is serious, he will hunt you down and bake you in his kiln.

Not sure why anybody is calling these things "knock offs" there's like a dozen claw grabbers being manufactured out there and nobody is calling them knock offs.
My shopmate has the ones from Generations and they're awesome... i borrow them like 20x a week.
If somebody has abandoned a project and someone else steps in with a new and different design, then i call it fair and legit.
Just talked to Malcolm. Michael is redesigning them and they are supposedly going to be available again in a few months.:bummed:

I'm glad to see your back!
I want EVERYONE to know these are the best thing I've ever used. I was hooked up when I started with a proto and i tell ya what every glass person I've met has popped wood when they saw what these can do. This year I'll be bringing them with me to the virginia glass fest in staunton, va. Hopfully I can drum up some extra business for ya.
Now I also do furnace work and have had neat results with bars but with the thickness it's a little hard. Hows your other one do with bigger thicker? I might be up for one or two @ reg. price...no discount....karma return time!.
I will be reviewing the large model in the next week or so. Score and snap 75?!?!? Can't wait! I will most likely only be using them on 44 and 50, but hell that is still dope.

I really like the design. can you use them on pulled points? Or would it just crush them?, I guess super thin tubing about a 1/4" in diameter with a slight taper. I usually just scratch them and snap em but I just cut my finger right thru my shirt for the zillionth time doing that.
ArtcoInc
03-24-2011, 07:11 PM
The JAWS are a scoring tool. They are used to create a easy, accurate, and consistent score on rods and tubing. Tapered tubing, like points, will be a little more difficult.

I was referring to the tool with the pliers and angle iron.
If you've never seen one before, that would make it the best scoring tool you've ever seen. :D

Just got my new 70mm tool in the mail today and wanted to help put the word out to the people waiting to hear some feedback............... As a glass blower and a tool maker I would like to say HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This tool is top notch. From the build to the quality of the material being used this tool is now my favorite and all it does is score my tube and rod but if you have ever used your nippers to score and press and snap with your fingers and have yet to slice your finger in half then you will unless you buy and use this tool.
Thanks Mike and keep up the good work. The glass blowing industry needs good tool makers like you!

i have the originals and i use the small one every day several times a day. just a great tool.
the newly designed big one is awesome as i had a chance to try one out and its night and day compared to the og model.
once upon a time i had an offer to trade my old one in on a new one and like a dipshit i put it on the back burner and never did it. (if the offer still stands i will glady do it now, hint hint).
this shows what kind of person michael is to make an offer like that though. i like someone who stands behind their deisgns like that.
i will get a new pair of the big ones someday soon. but i couldnt go a day without the smalls.
if you dont have a pair, get some...
