And wont try boro, shes trying to make icicle for the christmas tree out of moretti, you know just a twisted disk with a hook, but keeps fucking up and doesnt seem to understand or care that 6 mm rod isnt big enough (without gathering, and moretti at that) to make an icicle. Any tips to get the crank out of her comfort zone??

Dose her with some GHB and drop her off at a biker bar.
I don't know if it will help her glass blowing or anything.... just saying.
yeah just jump on the torch and whip one out real fast, telling her, "thats how its done."

Hey I make some really nice icicles with Effetre (Moretti), including dichro ones. It's as easy as making them with boro but faster 'cause less heat is needed.
Problem is, if she's afraid of working "off-mandrel", that's a whole separate issue... :twitch:

that never works.
I know, but it's much easier than trying to teach an old bead ninny anything.

Moretti works great for icicles. Rubber band five rods together to get a bigger gather. After pulling the icicle keep the rods hot while the end of the icicle cools. Then grab the icicle and create the loop. Create another gather and pull another. It's kind of tricky at first but after you make a few you'll develop a process that works for you. Try using different colors together. I like using clear with trans. blue or acqua. -dave

Or just let her struggle, video tape 10 minutes of it and put it on youtube :)
You could take a lesson from the old taste tests of the 70's and 80's.

She can do it with soft glass, so just show her how to work off mandrel. She might see boro as the evil pipe glass :D

I would tell her to keep going with the soft glass, maybe find a different soft glass type to work with that might have larger clear rods. I used to make all of my icicles with soft glass when I made them, much more cost efficient and profitable. I never made any money making boro icicles since the rod is very expensive comparatively, I've crunched the numbers everyway and soft is the way to go. It's just a learning curve, soft glass is different but not useless, it has many uses where boro just isn't cost effective for me, in the end you still have to pay your bills and make a profit to be successful! Each glass type has it's pros and cons and applications, keep in mind borosilicate is not the end all be all and you will be much better off.

Ok this statement confused me so I had to go and crunch the numbers myself after reading this. Heres what I came up with based on what I have been using.
3" 16 mil schott rod -.30 (if bought by the rod)
an inch or 2 of color -.15-.20 (northstar shorts)
A high guess for gas cost -.50
So 1$ in materials...plus whatever electric is for the kiln and less than 5 minutes of time.
I am getting 30$ for 6 to Friends and they are thrilled with the price......Am I missing something?
::edit:: I felt guilty charging this price for them but I try to keep to the 1$ a minute pricing rule

I'm looking at it from an account standpoint, most shops you go to buy their icicles from Europe/China for cents each. Even if you search the web, going price is only a few dollars each. So for you to match that price and make any money is almost impossible. Selling a few here and there is one thing, but most wholesalers will want them cheap. I only really do wholesale accounts so that is just my view on it.

Yea I can deff understand that...but I was suprised anyone would buy them for the $ to tell you the truth.
I was just making them as presents and people saw them and started asking how much so....

Simax flat rod, maybe 19mm x 4", strip each thin side with cane, color or dichroic prep. Get an even heat, twist and taper, toss a loop on the top. 6 minute's Dougie Fresh and its on,uh,uh, on(prep time included. No picture cause I'm lazy.

If she is loop impaired, have her make some beads out of the same glass as the icicle and garage them. Then, have her make a gather, smash out a disk, twist and pull like a twisted ribbon cane. Then, she can pull out one of the beads and attach the fat end of the cane to it. That way, she can still use a mandrel.
