So I accidentally made a pretty obvious discovery this morning. I had a 10mm punty rod that had some chinese black on the tip and a bit of clear over the top. As I used it, I have noticed that the black acts almost as a heat sink. I can get my piece hotter than with a full clear punty and maintain much better control. The 3/4" of black with a bit of clear stops the heat from travelling back into my clear handle and reduces flippity floppity stuff. Pretty simple but it sure helped this morning.

it works with any stiff color... like a good hard cobalt.... just the sead to keep the tension around it til it starts to flow.....
also if you leave it exposed and cold seal it pops off easier. atleast from what i noticed. but i used a little scrap
of my backing coloron the tip of it help heal the punty scar also how i learned that trick....

good observation. sometimes I make three to four inch mibs and when rounding the front use a 12 mill punty with a good amount of cobalt 5 or 6 on the end. It doesn't leave a clear spot when it is removed and you get the cooler connection as you mentioned. For anyone else, remember the punty has to be hotter than it normally would if it were clear when making the cold seal.

i realized that the light shine threw the tube traveled the heat .... and was only really noticable at places were i had put a smaller rod and rounded it down.... whee the light defused more..... or at the end of my quartz fuming rod....
I cant remeber if boro "conducts" this IR or its another wave or just a trick in my head... but i could see a spot of dark black disrupting this effect......
I know that eather boro or quartz is used for screens infront of IR cameras and IR control units...... i guess i better get back to reading at some time....

Steel punties with clear on the end work great. Zero wobble.

I have thought about the steel punty . I was wondering though does the heat sink into the steel very quick or do you have good working time before it gets too hot to hold? What work do you use them for?

With me, the steel punty depends on the app. Final marble shape, real good, maintains heat. Latti and cane pulls, no good, loses heat. I do love my stainless punty for tearing off crap for my water bowl. No more wasted glass.

Sepulworld got that date wrong. Angelo Barovier discovered clear crystal in 1428 by using lead oxide used as ship balast... I doubt he was alive in 1341 considering the lower life expectancy. But then again, Sepulworld can punty up to a cold, unopened beer... I still can't do that. For some reason the beer bottle cracks and I get beer all over my bench and torch.

IR does travel down boro in my shop... i notice it a lot because, i use short
pieces all the time... what can i say, i'm cheep... but, using my SS punty to
pull off excess to, bang off into the casting pond (water dish) is a kick ass idea...

BTDT: Sepulworld ceritified beer handler
This is what happens when you have drunk glassblowers next to a tore down barn and an old mattress frame for punty material...
Yo Rex, why you want to get all literal and bookish on a brother, shit... take away my punchline.

Hey, I'm just trying to help a brother out. Prolong the irony so we got a broader pallete for discussion. Not too much of the history of Sepulworld has been documented incorrectly because it is difficult to translate esparanto.
However, your punty discovery is brilliant. So now you qualify to study under Sepulworld now that you've broken through to the next level of punty consciousness. Mail your slides in.

That last shot is my submission for Niche next year. I have already patented my annealer from the first shot and it is available at Targets nationwide, beer bottles not included(Wal Mart already took it to China, F@#*)@ rip-off artists). Shipping on the tin is to spendy, so you must find your own dillapidated barn. I have found that it doesn't work well with domestic beverages.
Damn it's late. Back to melting
