Hey all, just thought we'd share some new work.
The nest we've done before but we didn't get full pictures of the last one before it went out so we did another for a different client. We were really happy that the lettering turned out as we wished. It's very recessed and the gold makes it pop pretty good.
The Octopuses are just a production item that's being refined. We liked the small ones positioning and motion much more than the large ones. So the larges will get the needed refinements. The big ones get really heavy after the fourth leg so they're a bit of tough work on the wrists and shoulders. I really wish they were called Bipuses, it would make the work a lot faster and easier. LOL.
Thanks for looking, I'll get around to some more stuff when it's loaded up.

Look close Rex. Of course a small amount of cold work would be necessary to make them fully functional.

Nice! I bet those folks were psyched to get that anniversary gift. I'm assuming that the names on the eggs are those of their kids and/or grandkids?

Love the octopuses! I knew someone who had a pet octopuss in one of their reef tanks & it was just an amazing creature,so intelligent & interesting. They definately give inspiration to any artist, when I get better I wan't to make a glass one that's 'pulsating'.WHen they go to change color to camoflauge, they quickly pulsate for a couple seconds & they color intensity/pattern is insane!

Hey all thanks for the replies.
Jes, they're all solid the whole time and are made from one piece, no seperate arm attachments. I have been working on the hollow versions so I can get rid of some of the weight on the larger ones. There's just some major craking issues with how I make them and I've only had a couple survive the many attempts. The color combos rely heavily on NS yellow and a contrasting tone.
EarthTones, I agree Octopuses are quite an inspiration. I got really interested in them after reading an article in Discover how they had the mental compacity of a three years old, they only live a short time and those color changing and morphing octopus are sick. I also heard a story of the Pacific Octo they had at the Seattle Aquarium. They had no idea why their tanks around the facility were losing fish....until they checked the security camera. The Octo would sneak out of its tank when the place had closed, make his way to other tanks, eat and then be back in his same enclosure before the employees got in in the morning. I can see him now whistling away and twiddling his tentacles. "Who, me?"

Love the nest idea. Did the client bring that to you as a fully conceptualized design? The lettering is very clear, and the gold paint is sharp. Nice contrast to the soft look of the sandblasted nest, and complement to the blue speckled eggs. Are the eggs attached to the nest?
Are you guys still doing the giant flower arrangements or jelly fish? It's cool to see your new stuff.
edit: shit, didn't look at the date; apparently this is old stuff. can someone delete this?

Please feel free to elaborate on this if you like. :D I've never seen it done any way but welding, and I'm having a hard time picturing how this would work. Would it start off like a disk, then cut slits between the arms and melt them round? :puzzled:

Make color stock, squash two thirds of the glass into disc shape, shape head, cut disc eight times, and pull out legs. The legs shold be two thirds of the stock with the head being comprised of the remaining one third. The rest is up to you. I used to try and weld eight legs on but always ended up with too much of a gap between the legs or trying to fit the last leg into too small of a space.

Candice, yes the nest idea we've done for about four clients now and I think is a great idea. As for the florals. They will come back in a big way but we're working out some different ideas encompassing more elements of nature, culture and fauna. We're also dealing with working in soft glass to make the vases ourselves. They'll most likely be done and released at the beginning of 2010.
