Kilk wash is usually used by ceramics people. It is normally used by mixing it with water and painting it on your shelves in the kiln so any glazes that drip down the piece are not sticking the piece to the shelf, but rather to a powdery layer of kilnwash. I don't know why it is called kilnwash, but I am curious.

The only time I have used kiln wash is when doing some fusion. The kiln wash is used with water to coat the bottom of the kiln floor to protect it just incase molten hot glass dripped onto it. Kiln wash also used when you fused glass together and then slumped the glass over a mold like stainless steel so the glass would not stick to it and easily removed from the mold.
