In Dichrome’s never ending quest to blend high end car enthusiasts with the best hand blown glass accessories available in the world we are proud to present Dichrome’s 1st Annual Glass Shift-Knob Competition. We are looking for the most amazing, fire-breathing, sculpted zombie face, faceted, pinwheel and raked patterns, with hot dichro and cool dichro images. Deep millie riddled 3D scenes and tight vortex’s. Sculpted cold worked Tiki or super hot soft glass swirls. The field is wide open and the only limitation in this competition is imagination! We will be honoring the top artist with a $1,000 grand prize along with a host of prizes from all of our sponsors. Including but not limited to: Glasscraft Inc, UST Glass, Coatings by Sanberg, and Dichroic Alchemy. Runner up will receive $500 cash prize and runner up prizes from our sponsors. Competition knobs will be displayed on-line and at all of our up-coming events in the 2008 Season. With artists like Erik Anders, Chris Rice, Ryan Bearclaw, and Alex Ubatuba in regular rotation on the site it promises to pull in some of the best artists in the industry.
We are currently seeking artists for our first annual glass competition. In exchange for your contribution we will display your submission in our booth at all our up-coming events. Including but not limited to the KKOA Led Sled Nationals (Salina, KS), April Action Car Show (Moab, UT), Peoples Fair (Denver, CO), 106.7 KBPI Car Show (Lafayette, CO) and other shows throughout the summer season. Your submission will also be placed on-line for enthusiasts to vote/bid on. Individuals on-line and at the shows will be able to vote on their favorites; with that and a panel of celebrity judges both in the automotive and glass industries, we will determine the winner of the 1st Annual Dichrome Glass Shift-Knob Competition.
Dichrome will also include a silent auction into the voting process. All knobs must include a short description and dollar amount for sale (reserve). If your reserve is met at the end of the competition we will ship it to the winning bidder and forward a check to you. If your reserve is not met we will ship any non-winning entries back to the artist. Winning entries will be surrendered to Dichrome, Inc.
Judging criteria:
First criteria and garnishing the most weight will be based on the over-all design and basic functionality of the shift-knob. The shift-knob must be functional having the ability to shift through the gears without falling apart or being too difficult to handle. Vessels only in Borosilicate and must maintain a minimum of 5 millimeters thickness. Solid knobs in both Soft or Borosilicate glass is ok.
Second criteria will be based on artistic design. How well do the colors interact with each other. How technically difficult is the designing of the patterns or the sculpting of the glass. Does it incorporate multiple techniques into the design? Is it both worked in the flame as well as cold worked?
Third criteria will be based on on-line voting as well as our expert panel of celebrity judges that will come from both the automotive industry as well as the glass industry.
Glass artist criteria:
Competition is open to all Borosilicate and Soft Glass artists. Vessels in Borosilicate will be accepted from qualified artists. If you have a Dichrome tool, you’re qualified. Solids will be accepted in both Borosilicate and Soft Glass forms. No soft glass vessels will be accepted.
Dichrome, Inc will drill out your shift knob for you. Solid shift-knobs will require a minimum of a 1 inch diameter face and 3/4 of an Inch in depth of solid color, solid clear, or surface worked clear to drill into. Cannot drill directly into Implosions (reductions), Lattachinos, welds, and other anomalies without risk of cracking. As long as you have the minimum face and depth any work over the top is ok. (We will not be responsible for any cracks as a result of drilling into welds, implosions, and other anomalies.)
All shift-knobs will be re-annealed in house before being cut into. Re-annealing will run a risk of shifting colors in the final result. Any questions can be answered by Chris Jetter at 877-937-4420 or 720-327-2066 cell.
