Misha,

Borostrike Lures (made by the folks at Art Glass House, I believe) were featured in a Northstar newsletter a while ago. Are these the ones you were thinking of?: http://www.northstarglass.com/newsletters/23.pdf

Another one (not dichro though, and definitely NOT practical!, but way kewl): http://www.remsen.com

Peace,
Suzee

thanks! these might work if I can get a hold of them somehow, their website doesn't work (the NS featured ones)

My grandpa and my dad both have bdays coming up, and they both fish. I thought for once I might give them some glass that they can use! :lol

get some stainless wire, a pair of roundnose pliers (mebbe 2) and some dichro mandrel beads. big fat ones...oblong.
strong loop, spacer, dichro bead, spacer, loop with hook......hell, throw a little $0.10 spinner on there....damnit, now i'm gonna have to go try this to see if i can do it in anything but theory ;)

Jeez Misha,

You shoulda said something at AGI. I make some fake ones... they don't work. Ron's are great for deep sea in the atlantic. So your dad and gpa can get down on some Marlins if they go to the gulf... lol

I got a request for lures, so when I searched "lures" this was the best thread I found. Bump.

I was thinking dichro in spinners and perhaps spoons.

Ron Jr, at Art Glass House makes them.

You could try http://www.r4glassstudio.com/index.html and contact him through his site, or by calling Art Glass House at 1-800-525-8009 during business hours (East Coast - don't forget the 3 hour time difference).

I ended up just buying some at the store and taking them apart to use the hardware. I would love to make more tho if I could find the hardware, they are quite fun. :)

I am getting a quote for jig hooks custom made with 316L stainless (moretti compatible). Any requests for other shapes? I might start selling glassworkers fishhooks!

I made a few lures last summer with dichro that were like spoons. They had great action and I tried them pretty much all summer and never caught anything on them. You can get hardware at any decent sporting goods store or bait shop. The only drawback is fishing in a river. I was trying to catch salmon with them last fall and I lost one hitting a rock on a cast. I didn't care much because I caught a bunch of huge salmon anyway. I think they are best considered a novelty and mounted in a shadowbox or something, though I will probably try again this summer. Good luck!

I guess mandrell using folks can make a better lure. glass hoops break off sooner of later.
I personally tryed making a glass lure right on high quality 440 stainless hooks. I had mixed rresults. Eventually it all breaks. But if you made a lure (of any type ) on a mandrell , you could then use it with some other components to make a nice rig. I bet the glass lasts long too. I'd do miniatures fish/turtle/frog/lizard, spoons, maybe some types of glass flies. maybe I'll look into that. ha, never thought i could benefit from a manderll.

Misha,

I haven't seen any posts from you in so long. Glad to see you back; how is the Matt? and the kids?
I'm signed up for Sabina's class next month. Sat in on a 4 hr. demo last week with Tim Keyzer, it was great; phantom flower mibs.... cool!
Anyway, the best place for fishing lure making materials is Cabella's. They have a giant catalog and several sub-catalogs covering everything from fresh water to salt water and gear fishing to fly fishing. Hooks, blades, you name it.
What kind of fishing do your Gpa and Dad do? Spinning, fly fishing, lakes or rivers, saltwater, deep sea, shore casting, surf, sound as in Puget Sound, bottom fishing such as for rock cod. All that makes a big differance.
If you need flies let me know; I'll tie you up some. Remember Mike Croft? You met him at Momka's. He is a local expert on fishing and is a published author on fishing. My goto guy for fishing info.
PJ

PS- It's a good thing I'm retired. Between glass, machining, and fishing and tying flies I don't have a minute to spare.

This is a great thread. I made a lure for my cousin, didn't work at all but it looked cool. Remember lures are there to catch fishermen, bait catches fish... (my grandpas quote)

Those lures look sweet Critter. Great luck to you in your venture. Has anyone tried to make one of those "popper" lures. My dad always had great luck at night bass fishing with them. Usually carved out of wood but looks like a fairly easy design for glass.

something like this...

http://www.maniaclures.com/wp-content/gallery/maniac-monster-pop-popper-lure/mmp8053.jpg

they are usually pretty pricey as well
