they make them in pieces and weld together .
They have a how to make page (http://www.kleinbottle.com/making_a_klein_bottle.html). this topic gets brought up from time to time .

Go to AGI this year and I will show you how to make one.

I think Doni Hatz will be there and she makes some cool klin bottles also.

I would love to make one of these, I have a friend that is a mathmatics professor that this would make a great gift for.

I'm going to try for AGI 2009

There's one made as a goblet in Contemporary Lampworking

It's not hard at all if you just think about it bit. Check out the giant one they made!

^ For sure. It is a matter of a ring seal, another seal, and a bend, all put together from pieces. Smaller scale ones are pretty straight forward. They are good practice objects for scientific work.

I've made one for my math professor when he asked last semester. I never tried sci blowing before and with a mounted un movible torch it was very difficult. I followed the steps I saw on the internet (the 3 pieces you make first and then attach). I completed 5 of them, but they were rough. If you do it that way make sure you can move your torch around the bottle... it would be a lot easier.

I've come up with a way to make it with a mounted torch... the steps are different though. If you are interested in hearing, let me know and I will type down the steps.

I wouldn't mind hearing them

I would like to hear how to make them on a mounted torch! I would love to make them for people.

#1 pull a point, heat up and blow out a bubble leaving a taper toward your blowtube. Pop a hole opposite your blow tube in the bubble. Garage this in the kiln.

#2 Take a significatly smaller diameter of tubing, and put a bend in it a bit below one end. (Compare to the bubble you've blown out by sliding this piece into the hole of the bubble and checking the bend you made to make sure that the smaller tube will line up with the side of the bubble.

#3 When you are satisfied with the bend in the smaller tube insert this into the hole in the bubble and weld the side of the bubble (by heating the outside of the bubble wall over the tube thats inside of it)

#4 now gently heat the wall of the hole in the bubble that you've stuck the smaller tube into (but becareful not to weld this tube shut) Now heat your smaller tube right where it comes out of the bubble and give a puff to thin the walls a bit (but don't thin them so much that you can't support the piece with this tube.

#5 Now you need to cut off the original handle from where the bubble tapers in the flame and pop a hole where that was. This is the "Top" of the bottle. Garage this piece in the kiln.

#6 Using the same smaller diameter tube shape the tube giving a U-bend at one end and a slight bend in the other end. Compare this piece to the top and side of the bubble in the kiln (making sure that it will match up to the open top of the bottle, and the side where the tube is welded into.) When you are satisfied with this attach a punty to the bottom of the U-bend and garage this in th kiln to let it get evenly heated.

#7 Pull out you bubble and pop a hole in the side by blowing through the tube thats attached. Pull out the other piece and seal it to the top and the side of the bubble. Remove the punty and garage the almost finished bottle in the kiln to let it get back up to temp.

#8 Pull out the bottle and work the welds using you still attached blowtube to make them nice and even and smooth. Garage this in the kiln.

#9 Attach a punty to the top of the bottle at the U-bend and remove the tubing from the bottom of the bottle (Now aren't you glad you puffed out the tube to make the sidewalls smaller already?) The tube should come off cleanly leaving an opening to the tube thats now running through the bottle. Heat up the bottom of the bottle and sticking your reamer into the hole to prevent in from closing ream the bottom of the bottle into a nice taper and heat the bottom again and sit it on your graphite pad so it'll stand right. Garage just to be safe.

#10 remove the punty, clean the scar, anneal as usual.

Congrats you have a klein bottle

I really hope this is comprehendable.

Do these have a function or any kind of practical use or are they just for shits and giggles?

Try making the inner tube with bend on a maria this way you assemble all in one. At the tapered end I add a piece of 6 or 7 m/m and bend it to fit the side seal in one move. This way it cuts out the garage and 2 or 3 of your steps just my 2c.

The klein bottle is (excuse the math nerd in me for coming out) a 3D representation of a 4D mathmatical concept. Theoretically it has only one surface, and zero volume (I believe). It's basically 2 mobius strips twisted and joined together.

I approve of your inner math nerd. But it is also cool to pour in colored liquid and set it upright again. You should see people try and figure out how it got in there.

It shows you basic steps on the same site you linked to here:http://www.kleinbottle.com/making_a_klein_bottle.html
Thanks for the step-by-step though Lurch! And to anyone going to AGI,I highly recommend watching anything Barry does on the torch! He's a true master.

I haven't posted an update about AGI yet, but Doni Hatz will be doing some demos here... one of them is a klein bottle.

Well, Dubya signed off on a $600.00 refund for every taxpayer, so maybe that's your ticket. Then you can say, "he was a shitty prez, but he bought me a golden ticket!"
