Greymatter Glass
06-16-2005, 07:59 PM
Hey guys this is the glass burner formerly known as AGA Doug on the sleEZy board. AGA is no longer AGA (it's Studio Broadway) and anyways I'm not working there anymore, so I might as well use my glassartists/company name.

Anyways... for the new people, what can I really say about me....

I'm 26, started blowing when I was 21, so I've been blowing glass for about 5 years. Borm in Albuquerque, raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, now i live in Albuquerque again, where I'm about to get my BFA from UNM.

I started on a minor, moved to a midrange, now I'm on a Carlise CC. At first I was making mushroom pendants and little marbles, now I make big pendants, pipes, and marbles.

I'm Greymatter Glass on ga.org and I have a gallery of some of my older work as well as that of friends of past workshops at Studio Broadway (Formerly AGAS) at http://www.greymatter.org/gallery/gallery/

Anyways, best wishes for the new forum, I hope we can come to some civil middle ground between what was.

-Doug

p.s. how do I get my little title back? mad scientist wasn't it?

Fred R., City of Orange,California.
Have only ever wanted to be an artist. Carved sticks and soap as a kid. Moved on to making Fimo beads by 14 or 15. Went through phases of painting and sculpting, eventually leading to my discovery of glass in 2000. Began with fusing and slumping, moved to lampwork in 2002, with soft glass. In 2004 began making beads with boro.

I'm a librarian type a guy with chimpanzee features. I skate concrete bowls and parks occasionally and profess to be pretty good at whatever video game you wanna throw my way, except Tiger Woods. I'm 33 and am married to Heather, someone I have known for about 13 years.
Was that too long? Oh well.
Peace and thanks for having me,
Fred Rossi.

Hey y'all, I'm Suzanne (aka suzee). Recovering Californian/American, living in Canada for a LONG time now. Mostly live in Calgary, but often found in a one room cabin high in the Kootenay mountains of BC. When in BC, you'll find me hiding in the dark caves of Ainsworth Hotsprings, leaving marbles and beads in hidden crevices....just for fun.
Been at the torch for 8 years, doing kiln work for 13 years, started in stained glass about 25 years ago (can't remember exact dates....too old now, memory fading....)
Real job....working part-time on the child abuse crisis line. Looking forward to leaving that behind soon.....hoping they can give me some kind of happy pill to make me forget all about it....just vague memories of working for the gov't for 20 years...aarrrghh...how did this happen???

I still remember the first day that Kristian opened the pipemaker's forum.....after being snubbed at some other forums many times. Thanks to all who have continued on with this effort....WELL DONE!

Peace,
Suzee

I'm Matt, a student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo during the school year, back to Corvallis, Oregon for this summer. I started making soft glass beads Spring 2004, started making boro pendants Fall 2004 and pipes in 2005. I just got my first torch this year and am definitely addicted. I'm very interested in meeting other glassblowers to discuss techniques and learn more, so if you are around either of my homes and interested in sharing experiences and techniques, let me know!

i'm Chris A., 36, from melbourne australia, and i've been making love to glass since 1990. a few years ago i finished my master of fine arts and finally my sh*t is coming together. i started out in scientific glass, but it did my head in after a repetetive 2 years and i went to work in a bar serving drinks for a while. however, what i learned during that time has proven invaluable, and i recommend learning from a sci-blower if you can. while at university i also did 7 years of furnace blowing ... something else i recommend to every flameworker i meet ... to do a stint in the hotshop.
here's a page i usually direct people to, and use until i get mine proper one set up. some of the work is in progress, etc ... i do what i can to update the images, but usually it's a little out of date

My name is Chris Camac. I work for Carlisle Machine Works as a sales rep, but that also means that I do a lot of other things here, like having a hand in a lot of the R&D work. I have several hobbies including glass, computers, games of every type. I also have a family at home that probably wishes I didn't spend so much time on work and other hobbies :D

Carlisle is a very open company, that likes to listen to the glass industry and its needs. So if anyone has any ideas on new things they would like to see or just ways to upgrade existing Carlisle items, please let me know either through e-mail or PMing me.

Misty Moon, here. Living in SW Indiana. Single parent of an awesome 10 year old boy. PTA Treasurer, Sunday School Director/Teacher, working 5 days a week slinging lunch at a local restaurant. I love creating things, I started out making dresses, loomed beaded pieces, peyote stitch....Been sharing a house with my Mom for the last nine years, she's my best friend and my best sales person, hehe.... Although it's a two bedroom house and the boy and I share a room, I have designed and built the best bunk beds in the world( according to my son that is), also learned how to hang drywall after the ceiling fell down, and how to be a plumber, when the water pipes busted... (I don't like to pay for anything I think I can possibly do myself :) .) Got my love for glass on dead tour in '93 (go figure), where I was told "girls don't blow glass" ....got me some basic skills in '98, a cutting torch, and a desire to do more... Now I have a Lynx, yeah!! I lamp at night after all the other work is done. I also have taught my Sunday school classes all about the power of Bartering! I have them using their artistic skills for me in trade for beads/pendants. I want them to know that what they do has value even at a young age...I believe that encouraging creativity and art in children is good for their self esteem.....okay, did I say I come from a long line of long-winded individuals? I could go on forever, but I'll stop now, before you all fall asleep. Much Love to this board and all who a part of it, Misty Moon

My name is Merlin, 27. Portland, Oregon. I started as an apprentice in Eugene, Or. in 2000 and been working steady up to now. First couple weeks i worked on marbles, then spoons, Then sidecars, hammers, watsons, sherlocks, in that order. all touch and pull raked (wanted to focus on shaping first) Learned a few heady techs after that, but fell short of my own expectations (as usual) when the need to make money trapped me in the monotony of production. I make a fancy pipe once in a while, pendants, earrings, and once a year i make a bunch of random christmas gifts. I appreciate what glass does for me, but I am looking for more out of our relationship. Need to spice things up a bit

Sorry I have not posted here yet I have not realy been on the computer much since the switch of boards. My name is Jay been making soft glass beads since1996 and have done a lot of other stuff along the way but my main focus is still moretti objects and beads, with a healthy dose of boro for sculpture (it is just so much easier to sculpt than morettibut the dance just isn't thae same. I could babble for a while but I won't. I liv in Portland OR and have traveled the country for shows and classes bothas student and teacher. These days my glass is taking a back seat to my family but in a couple years I'll be full time again. JAy S.

I frequint the marble shows and some local art fairs. I have a partner in crime and her name is Delilah Davis. We are not related or together in anyway except for business. Hey all, drew from toledo, OH here. ive basically been a lurker for the past 3-4 years or so on the ez and now here. ive got a few years of off and on torch time, but i started a couple of years before that with soft glass, and am currently an assistant in a hot shop. i dont have a space right now, and as glass isnt like riding a bike, i keep having to sort of re-learn some things when i go back. its not like its a chore or anything tho. It looks like i'll have a studio space around may, and im going to be living either there or here :)

its good to see this place still up and running after 'the cataclysm'. its definately the best resource for glassblowers on the internet when combined with glassartists.org.

anyway, glad to be back.

Hey there,
My name is Kevin. My wife and I started lampworking nine years ago this month. She quit for a while (2 kids, a new job, burnt out, etc.) but is feeling it again enough that I'm putting a workspace back together for her so she can stop using mine! We are self-taught out of the out of print John Burton book--don't know who he is?--shame on you!) B/c of that, we mixed our own color from oxides for the last eight years. Just a year ago I finally broke down and bought some other color--now I only mix a few colors that I can't buy anywhere. Due to monetary concerns, I was stuck making straight prodo (though it is very different from most other folks, due to my retarded habits from being self-taught and due to the above-mentioned color mixing) for all this time, but things have been changing and I'm branching into more creative work. I'm stoked that I found this group, it's had a very positive and inspirational impact on me!

I guess I like it Hot. Studio's up in Northwest Illinois, but I now live in Iowa (go figure). Work mostly kilnfired glass but manage to sneak in enough time on the torch. Co-illustrated Cindy's first b/w bead book and have stuff in her other 2 books too. Taught at Hoys when he first got into the fused. Glad to have enough time now to spend time with the group, now that I've registered and stopped hiding in the shadows. Great Work Guys!

Hola Y'all,

My name is Charles Henderson, I live in Roswell, NM, and have only been on the torch for about a month. I am pleased with my progress, but all my stuff is pretty pathetic so far. I, however, will not be giving up. So, you all in the glass world will someday know who I am. Hopefully because of my work.

There is only one glass studio in town, and I don't really click with the owner. If there is anyone closer than Albuquerque or Las Cruces, PLEASE let me know. I need to make some friends in the glass world.

When I was 7 or 8 I saw a guy doing glass sculpture at the county fair and watched him for hours. Most of my life I have been heavy into custom cars (not ricers), but recently my health broke (bad arthritis, fibromyalgia, & other issues), so I have had to give up that dream because my body just can't take it. :depressed However, that has been the catalyst that has brought me to glass. I have wanted to get into it for a very long time, but cars always took priority and lots of $$$$.

Hmm, sorry, I tend to ramble,

Charlie.
