being completely fed up with doing prodo and absolutely no motivation to work lately. tonite i decided if im not gonna get the shit done that i need to, i may as well try something outside of my comfort zone. so heres another fume and clear piece, not at all what i had in mind when i got started with it but im pretty happy with the results except a couple of things, i dont like the carb and the shaping could be better in some places but for a first try at something like this i think it came out pretty nice.

That's cool Garrick, the fuming is awesome. All it's missing is a 'janky' word implosion marble,I think that would have tied it all together. (just kidding mang, playing on your self criticism,I don't think that pipes janky at all,but I'm a beginner so I have low standards)

Nice garrick, I like the horn feature the best, the shaping is not bad either I think.

thanks guys, the horn is what makes the piece in my opinion. and i really learned alot shaping that stem, it was actually alot easier to do than i have always imagined.
it's a siamese fighting fish you can smoke out of. nice work!

i took a 2 to 3 inch section of 13 mil rod fumed it with silver and drew clear lines down it leaving enough space between each line to draw another one. then burned off the unencased silver and fumed with gold and drew lines inbetween the first set.

i was always wonderin, awsome thanks garrick, i may have to try this today..
The shaping is kinda janky, on teh can.
But I think the sweet fume job makes up for any shape jankyness.

I kinda dug the shaping on the can...

How did you get image out of your head and translated into glass? You did a sketch first and worked towards that, or?
I found that keeping a sketchbook and trying to make what I draw is a good discipline and I get less days of dry creativity, then I refer back to it and pick up old ideas and develop or combine them.
How bout you? How do you get it out of your head?

no sketching was involved. i was actually intending to do a hammer when i started. i was thinking about ripping donuts in half to create horns and was planning on having 2 halves of the donut to work with but when i actually was in the process of ripping it i realized that i wasnt gonna come out like i had in my head so i improvised and came up with this. im glad it happened that way tho cause i think i can really use this in alot of different ways.

Man I have an EMPTY sketchbook and tons of little scrap papers with drawings , I never seem to get the sketchbook before I draw .

i have zero artistic ability when it comes to drawing or sketching, which is kinda weird considering i grew up watching my dad draw for a living and doing sci fi paintings in his spare time. my sister followed in his footsteps and is an amazing artist herself. i always thought the creativity in the family skipped me until i discovered glass

that piece is sick! ithe can area look like some kinda squishy green organ in a jar. i have no idea how you shaped that mouthpiece half i dont see a weld there. how long did that thing take? and definitely not janky.
garrick
03-04-2008, 08:53 AM
thanks. it took me a little over an hour of actual working time, alot of stop and go though, so more like 2 hours.
the stem/mouthpiece is all one section, the two hollow horns started as a donut and was ripped into a pitchfork type shape then with a bushy flame i just heated them up and let gravity do the rest. hope that makes sense.

i did this spoon last night in the same style. my only problem with it is i was a little heavy on the gold fume with this one.

garrick the heavy gold fume looks really pretty though. i love the colors of heavy fume how come people always say they went too heavy? is it just uneconomical or is there some other reason?
is it just silver and gold on the horns? i think the colors are already sick but to do it with fuming is extra sick!
garrick
03-07-2008, 11:57 AM
its silver and gold on the horns
the reason people try to stay away from over fuming is because if you want it to "change colors" after use less is better
Dude thats spoon is pretty damn sick. A little gold heavy but still damn nice.

thanks dB
i made this one today but decided to use a little bit of color, the stringers are elvis and turbo over steel wool. i think the first has more flow to it and i dont care for the way the horn is shaped on the side with the carb. ill probably throw it back in the kiln tomorrow and tweak it a little bit.
Nice bro, you were able to match the other ones shape pretty good.

I'd like to see you put those horns closer to the piece towards the end. Then add just a tiny little clear bridge between the body of the piece and the horn. Makes the horn much stronger and makes the piece flow better. Just an opinion.
Also, if you'd like to show people what your jankies look like after the color change, fill the piece with a really dark liquid and cork the holes. I have not found the perfect black liquid yet, maybe someone here is smarter than I. I use Coca-cola (but that tends to be lighter brown) and Food coloring (only dark color is blue and lots of times Im looking for the blues and it distorts my perception)

I'm guessing Soy Sauce would be perfect.

Was gonna say the same thing about his horns myself Maestro.
As to the PERFECT brown liquid to see the colors, try Blackstrap Molasses. It works the best,it's really dark, thick, and sticky(so it clings to the glass inside, other liquids don't do that and the light qualities are different),and it washes out with water.
PS: the piece looks awesome, good work!

yeah i thought about doing that with the horns when i was making it but changed my mind, im still gonna work on it a little bit more so i may do that.
wouldnt filling it with coke leave it pretty sticky?

03-08-2008, 04:24 PM
anybody got any advice on making this thing stand up with out changing the shape of the can? i was thinking maybe a small goblet like foot but i have zero expereince in making goblets or feet for that manner.
Throw some horns on that bitch.
One on each side tip down.
garrick
03-08-2008, 04:35 PM
i thought about that also but i want the mouthpiece more sticking strait up and i dont think it would balance very well like that
Alfred
03-08-2008, 04:45 PM
Add some marbles(clear or not) in strategic places. Look for a vertical center line when you hold it the way you want it to sit.
Molasses,I'm telling you, makes it look exactly like it will "colored".Rinse with water afterwards.
Alfred
03-08-2008, 04:49 PM
A nice size mib attached to either of the horns, the can, and that first pull below the joint.
...Molasses,I'm telling you, makes it look exactly like it will "colored".Rinse with water afterwards.
That's a great idea. It makes sense that thicker stuff like molasses would work better.
Mac Maestro

All a piece needs to have to stand up is 3 touch points. I usually use the mouthpiece as the first, and any small dots of glass can act as the others. Even something as small as a spoon can have two dots of glass where you would have flattened it to stand. Once you know where your centergrav is going to be every time, you can make little legs or marbs instead of dots....
Molasses. Hmmm... I thought of that - but thought it would be too thick, messy, and hard to work with. But I never actually tried it. Maybe i'll give that a shot. Thanks. I may try the soy too or some teriyaki. Good call.
Alfred
03-11-2008, 10:07 AM
It can be a little messy, but it washes off with water, and I haven't found anything that comes as close to what a "colored' piece looks like.I've tried soy, teriyaki, coffee, Pepsi/Coke/Dr Pepper, black paint, ink, and a bunch of other things, nothing seems to work as well!Warm it up a little and it'll flow better(warm not heat;))

Nice!! It looks really chunky :) Those horns are looking good man!
This thread is a trip. You posted the first piece shortly after I joined the melting pot. Your "janky" piece got me to make my janky piece (which lit a fire under me to get better) and because of that, eventually got me outta doing low end prodo (24/7) a year down the road. I'm glad you posted that first piece :)
Truly and deeply I thank you.
Its funny how when I joined lurch and Crip where what got me going! I saw Crips progress and doing prodo 24/7 was a deams. Know I am busting prodo and like Garrick find time to do a few preps on the side after my prodo and once ever couple of weeks try somthing new or diff. We feed off each other and it seems to work I just wish my peers local would have jumped my ass long ago for working so much time on the low end stuff . When at that time it was kind of a hobby!

thanks guys. i would love to do more stuff like this but prodo sells itself and c.r.e.a.m. haha. this one did go together really smoothly and the size came out exactly like i had in my head so im pretty happy with it. my only complaints with this one is i was out of rasta gold and had to use yellow crayon, rasta woulda toned it down just right i think. and i ran out of forrest green in the middle of making it so i had to use moss on the horns. downstem is a little short also but still bubbles.
as far as being inspiration to you guys all i can say is likewise. crip and lurch you have both just gotten better and better and i love watching it.

post some prodo stuff!
i like to see the simpler stuff that i can start practising:)
and if you use Momka Marley you wont have to use yellow crayon.

i personally dont like the marley for the same reason. i dont like the shades of yellow and green. i may put up some prodo pics later.
