Every Sunday at my shop I invite a scientific worker over and he does tutorials and answers questions. He has 38yrs exp. in the scientific field and knows just about anything you would ever want to know about glass or quartz. I am inviting anyone interested to come to contact me and come to Columbus. If anyone is interested e-mail me at intrepidglassworks@yahoo.com. Usually strats around two and demos last a couple hours. Next Sunday we are covering Klein Mugs and Dewar seals. -

Class this Sunday has been canceled. Next class is 3/22 and if I get off my ass and get a new vacuum pump before then it will also include a demo on filling glass with noble gases and creating a set-up for doing this on the cheap. So to recap- class on 22nd. Will cover:

basics of setting up and filling plasma sculpture
dewar seals
klien mugs

if anyone wants to come and put on a demo of their own you are more than welcome. If anyone knows how to do photo-abrasive processes and wants to show me, that would be awesome. Someone commented that "we" are the only others besides SCC offering scientific glass. I just moonlight as a glassblower and in no way would consider myself a scientific glassblower. This is not a extremely structured formal class, this is me inviting other artists into my studio to share some of the knowledge being shared with me. If someone else out there had the opportunity to actively share knowledge I would expect them to do the same. I know that getting your foot in the door of a scientific shop is easier said then done and I know New Jersey is a far off place in which I would never want to live. Living in Ohio options to study scientific glass are non existent. I have been lucky enough to make friends with a scientific worker who wants to share what he knows, but due to where he works he can not take an apprentice or join the ASGA. We are all students of the flame.

Knowledge is free and should remain the fuel of innovation

..... sorry for rambling .... but shit! no one has taken me up this offer.

I'm sorry to correct you, but the scientific glassblowing society is the ASGS, American Scientific Glass Society. If you have a chapter local to you, you should see if they offer demos to the public regarding scientific glassblowing. The society is an amazing organization. Check their website.. http://www.asgs-glass.org/

There is not many scientific shops in Ohio. There are scientific shops ( that I know of) at ohio state and bowling green. There is a private shop outside cincy and one at proctor and gamble. Then there is a quartz shop in thornville and GE has a quartz repair shop in hebron. There are probably two other small shops, but not a lot. My friend is old and retiring and wants to share a bit of what he knows.

If all goes to plan I will be firing up the hotshop for the first time saturday!!! I just need to install the gas mixer and we are ready to rock. The demos on sunday will include a taking a piece from a technical drawing and making it to specification. We will be making a form of laser tube and a glass manifold. The seals being demonstrated will include ring seals, dewar seals, sucky seals, and t- seals. Starts around noon . PM me for directions.-

Sundays class went great and I am going to hold another one the second sunday of next month. If you attend please refrain from telling stories about yourself till after the demonstrations and don't be a glasshole. not going to name names but you know who you are. I think everyone walked away from the class with a better idea of what scientific glassblowing is about and had a good time. I hope to see more of you there next time ( I have to work out the exact date with the scientific glassblower, but tentativly it will be oct. 11th..... will post it as soon as I know)
