View Full Version : quick gas line Q's.

so i left gas lines for almost last in my new shop, which means i'm getting to them right now....
the copper's all run, i have most of the fittings, and a general idea of the sequence things are being installed in from one end to the other.....there are just a couple variables left that affect the placement of some parts.
my tanks are outside, the lines come through the wall and out under my bench...flex copper for the propane and sleeved T-grade for the oxy. there's a shutoff on the propane.
now, i had been planning on putting inline regs under the bench to have adjustment capability w/o going outside to do it.....
is this really necessary in a single-torch bench situation?
i had inlines when two torches were fighting for the gas all the time, but with just mine i haven't really seen the pressure fluctuate once i set it first thing every day.....unless the tank is dying.
one other thing, flashback arrestors can be placed anywhere inline on the gas, right? i assume that it's better to have them closer to the bench, and definitely before the inline regs (if they're installed). correct?
thanks

In line regs are usually only needed for multiple torch set ups, and yes, "the closer the better" on arrestors

that's kinda what i'd figured.....never had a long run of line before, so the FBA's were always on the out line of the regs before the hose.....i'll just pop em on before the short hoses that hook up the torch.
....mostly for future reference (i hope ;)) but does anyone know of a place to get either:
1) cheap, single stage, single gauge regs to make into inlines for inside
or
2) some kind of fixed (higher) pressure reg to put on tanks just to cut it down enough for the lines so i could use my existing regs as inlines inside?
i kinda like the idea of having pressure adjustment inside, but don't really like the idea of having to shell out for a new set of regs that really have more capability than i need.

ps. while i'm at it, also mostly for reference, where in HELL has all those hard to find brass "B" fittings online?
i mean, seriously, i can't be the only person that's ever wished i could find a 1/4 turn ball valve with "B" fittings (without having to buy 6 adapters for each side) anyone? bueller?

i find em from wale and abr some gas shops , many regs use an 1/4-b at the hose end.... so you can normaly find those at weld shops...... or etc...
you have no idea the crazyness for my manifold im going threw.

I kind of vote for #2... Have intermediate pressure regulators at tanks, And adjustable low pressure regulators at bench....
BUT if you can live with setting pressure once when you open tank valves, go with the regs at tanks and save a buck....
If nothing else.... "B" fitting.... Or "regulator fitting".

#79215A2 for fuel (left hand thread)
#79215A1 for oxygen (right hand thread)
Local welding supplier should also have them.
Just use 1/4 NPT Female to XXX (your pipe size) adapter and you are done...

yeah, i can get 1/4npt to "B" at the welding shop, but that's basically it.....i was hoping someone had found, say a welding supply place that stocked a bunch of various shit with "B" fittings, factory....till then, adapters it is.

how do you tell by looking which ones on the mcmaster site are left threaded? is there some abbreviation difference like npt vs nptf?

Here is web page for Western Brass... They are a manufacturer of many gas and hose and tank brass connectors/fittings...
http://www.westernenterprises.com/enterprises/indintro.html
Open table on contents of their catalog and explore.... many wonderful things to find....
Look at this...

Maybe you can order the parts you need by manufacturers BRAND NAME and PART NUMBER.
Also be aware that the "outlet fitting" come in packages of two, one oxygen fitting and one fuel fitting (though that packaging is not listed here). Also observe that come in NPT sizes of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch.
Now that you know they are manufactured, the challenge if you choose to accept it is up to to you to find them.
It might be possible to e-mail Western Brass sales dept to see if the can send along a retailer that has parts you want.
Google search by "Western Brass" brand name and "part numbers" may turn up online retailer.
