I have been planning this for many years. About two years ago I started doing the background work to get extra web sites and trademarks for names. After going through the process to trademark "World Flame off", I was told by my trademark attorney that I would actually have to hold an event within a certain time frame to trademark the name. So the huge event that I planned for 2009 will be done a year earlier and will be a World Flame Off for marbles and beads(pendants also).
In 2009 the World Flame Off will happen with teams of four from Japan, Italy, Germany and a few from the US. This will be the huge event and will have devisions for marble, beads, sculpture, goblet, and hopefully , lathe.
So here is some information on what I have lined up now.
May 1, 2008 there will be information on my web site about sending in a request form to participate. Between sixty and eighty spots will be availiable .There will be a $50 entry fee.

September 5-6-7, 2008 will be the third year for the Fall Tucson Best Bead Show. During this event there will be a flame off. It will be the first ever World Flame Off (I will be calling it world flame off because it will include participants from outside of the U.S.).

Here is some basic information on the World Flame off to be held in Tucson, Arizona on Sept 5-6-7, 2008.
There will be four divisions within the competition.
Marble-hard glass
Marble-soft glass
Bead-hard glass
Bead-soft glass
Pendants will also be in the bead category.
There will be prizes for the first , second and third place in the four categories.
There will be a few Awards of Excellence presented by a variety of the corporate sponsors.

The sponsors of the World Flame Off will be:
Jen-Ken Kilns
Nortel Manufacturing
Coatings by Sandberg, Inc.
Soft Flex Company
Carlisle Machine Works
Glass Alchemy
Uroboros Glass

The director of the World Flame Off will be Barry Lafler. The assistant director will be Susan Webb.
The marbles and beads will be made from 9 AM to 7 PM on Friday and Saturday, Sept 5-6.
There will be between three and six torches running at any one time. It depends on what the fire marshall will allow.
There will be twenty judges . These will be representative of the corporate sponsors and art class collectors that are very well known to the marble and bead community.
The winners will be announced at noon on Sunday, Sept 7,2008.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third in marbles-hard and soft and beads-hard and soft.
There will be as many as eight Awards of Excellence. These will be presented by representatives of the corporate sponsors, the Mayor’s office of the city of Tucson and Barry Lafler .
These Awards of Excellence can be thought of as a kind of “best of show”. One individual can win multiple Awards of Excellence.
There will be twelve first, second and third place winners. There will be another eight Awards of Excellence.
These twenty winners will receive prizes that will be torches, ovens, glass rod, Dichroic glass and tools.
All prizes that are solicited for the winners will be divided into prize packages. First place a torch, oven and other things. Second and third place to have lesser values.
In 2002 Crystal Myths promoted its first Flame Off. There were nine winner’s prizes and 107 door prizes. All the prizes this time will go to just the twenty that are winners and Award of Excellence recipients.
The marbles and beads will be auctioned off at 1 PM on Sunday, Sept 7. This will be a live auction. Half the money from each auction will go to the artist. The other half will go to the Kino Veteran’s Memorial Community Center and the Sonoran Glass School.
The live auction will hopefully draw high end collectors from the marble and bead world.
There will be an area set aside solely for the purpose of showing artist’s work to one another. This is an area where lampworkers can show off their work or trade. This area will be near the Flame Off area and not inside the bead show area. It is not intended to be a sales area.

This is just to give you an idea of what I have planned. I thank you all for your support of the flameworking community. This event will only grow each year.

I hope I can make it out for this it sounds like a hot party in the making. It's always a great time watching you old codgers "(((codg·er Pronunciation[koj-er] –noun an eccentric man, esp. one who is old.)))" show off.

I'm up for it... and it doesn't conflict with the Female Flameoff in Berkeley in October. whoa baby, this ought to be a good time, and something to plan for.

but it does come right on the heels of AGI... oh baby again.

I'm down for it. I'll call Bear back today.

2 concerns off the bat: (ok, one concern and one question)

No door prizes? Why not? I thought that was one of the best things about your first one here in Albuquerque (and not just because I won a few pounds of color).

Second, do you only pay the $50 if you get a spot, or is it $50 to take a chance you'll be accepted?

There will not be any door prizes. There were one hundred and seven door prizes at my last flame off.It took hours to just call out the winners . The plan is to make things easy and simple. There is no fee to enter and watch. Call that your door prize.
Peaople wanting to enter the flame off will send in a request form that will be on my web site May first. There will be a jury of five that will choose the participants.
If accepted , then $50 is paid.
