god damn flames are magnets for skin! Caused me to ruin the best looking piece I ever made. But thats what I get for doing glass at 2 AM and having a poor table set up. Sorry for the bad pic but its hard to get a shot of the underside of your own arm. Total area is about 3 inches diameter of some serious skin sizzle.
if you weren't sure before let me tell you a Mirage has got some serious heat. :wes:

the pic doesn't do the burn justice. Its not super gnarly or anything but its right on the spot of your arm that you rest against the bench.
Its just wierd that I hear about people getting tagged on their GTT's but i never even came close to the flame on any of the other 3 torches I used. I think it might have something to do with the small diameter of the nose cause I have bumped the cooling shroud on the CC a few times and that let me know I was too close.
The glass rack is Maestro's and its sweet.

It doesn't even have any black crispy bits on it... did it even smoke? If it didn't smoke, well...

I don't understand why this thread is called "what the hell is with GTT's", seems to me it should be, I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and burnt myself. Just like every other glass blower. You know what they say, "if you play with fire you're gonna get burned"!

fuck I burn myself all the time. I don't put my arm into the flame all the time. THats what the point is.

thats my camera phone for you trying to contort my arm upside down. THe dark center blur your seeing is black as shit in person. Funny it really didn't hurt. I was more pissed about loosing the piece.
EDIT - not sure if it smoked but it stunk like hell do I get any points for that?

Give it a few more days and maybe a nice sun tan and you'll have a keeper!

heres the piece I lost. Its a 4 colors striped on 15 mm rod then spun , compressed, spun back on itself to get concentric rings, then pressed into a maria, 15 mm removed, tagged on side, marvered and stretched evenly to hold the marble/concentric rings and reformed into a circle then marvered down on both sides to form a ball, a few dots here and there with a tungsten, fumed, then encased then formed into a tube. It wasn't something super special like a 500 dollar piece but it was a lot for me to get it exactly how I wanted it for the first time. Don't ask for a shot of the whole piece because I won't post it due to a promise I made.
for some reason the photobucket editor crops it in my album but is posting the whole pic here. Tell I figure it out this is the only pic I'll put up. Its not the best pic of it.

Bad smell is good, and not feeling it means that you got it good enough. I have heard of people who get burned, in a largish spot, then if it hurts right off, gotta get brave and toast it a bit more to kill the nerves... back into the flame!

I had a big charred spot on my thumb. It was pretty much blackened skin in a loacalized circle. it was numb. it was numb until day 3 when the burnt skin split open, exposing a fresh fleashy interior. it took a month to heal. but the fingerprint came back, except for some

Done that, but with a hot rod not the flame.

do you use lox? cause i hear it helps burns if immediately after burning yourself you lick the frost on the dewar. but make sure you turn your torch off first and take plenty of pictures to show us progress

I know sometimes I get in a fog when working even when taking safety breaks often that my hands are going through the motions but the brain switches off or is thinking about something else.
I try to set routines like after fire polishing blowtubes I put them in one spot in the kiln. But I still get one every now and then especially trying to cram 8 hours of work into 2 hours.
Funny story it used to take me 20 minutes to shut the studio down at night cause I'd recheck everything 20 times. As silly as it sounds Maestro showed me how to do everything in steps then take pauses at the same spots to take a breath so I could shut the door at night knowing everything was done and not lay in bed wondering if I forgot something and the studio is gonna burn down. I try to translate that to everything I do now in the studio and it helps alot. Unfortunatly that doesn't fix butterfingeredness.

Well just don't burn yourself 20 times in a row to reinforce the feeling, okay?
