So I put a part of a piece in the kiln to garage it and carry on making another part of the piece.

When I take the first piece out of the kiln, it invariably picks up a tiny speck or two from the kiln floor. No matter clean it is.

I made a small rack to keep work off the kiln floor but sometimes I still catch it when moving it from the kiln.

So my question is;

How to you remove them tiny specks of dust, you know, the ones that sprkle as it passes through the flame?

I use a kevlar sleeve to wipe off the dust. I always sweep the dust out of the kiln in the morning before I turn it on. I still get a small amount of dust on pieces anyways. But you can't leave it on the piece if you are going to work it again because it can stick and ruin the surface. A cotton rag will burn a little, but it will wipe the dust off also. Anybody here used kiln wash on the floor? I don't, but I might try it on recommendation.

I wipe things off with a peice of old blue jeans .Just be careful to not burn it .Works good and its disposable after getting to dirty and most everyone has an old pair of blue jeans to recycle.

I used my shirt a few times in a pinch.

I watched Lino's demo at GAS in Asheville, he used his fingers several times to clean specks on a huge piece. Total badass.

You can also get a thin graphite liner for your kiln, but it will only cut down on the amount of dust, not eliminate it. I have an old Heat Defense Mitt folded up just below the kiln to wipe things off.

i'll second the paper towels. kevlar gloves left fibers and whatnot on my black tubing.

Thanks folks.

I have the floor painted with shelf primer/kilnwash/wodevayercallit so if there any coodies I can see em but some always escapes me...

Thanks for the tips, repped for the cardboard cos it's the most rad/abstract :-)

I've got a towel next to my bench to whipe with, I've always been told never to blow on it.

I use a cotton rag it burns sometimes but that always comes off when it hits the flame unlike kiln dust.
I use my shop vac to clean out the kiln but it still gets dust on everything.
