My next upgrade has got to be glasses.

Whithout getting crazy and dissin people, what glasses do you guys like. I am thinking the Phillips Boroscopes Goggles with the Ace top and shade 3 bottom, from mountain glass. Do they make a solid color frame so the light does not reflect thru it?

Glass Pyro
06-24-2008, 11:34 PM
hmm, maybe not those...it says the ace lens is no good unless it has at least a shade 3 green tint on it.

you might wanna do a search on that one its been discussed pretty in depth. As far as the split lenses some people like it so they can peek over the shaded part. Since you look down at the glass when your working you should be protected but some people have a tendancy to constantly peek over. I personally can't stand any variations in my lenses. I tend to focus on that so split wether shade 3 bottom and nothing on top or shade 5 or 6 bottom with shade 3 on top is not for me. But you'll see a lot of people talk about that too if you search.

Yeah I searched and I think I know what I am gonna get, just can't seem to find something with a solid color frame. non-transparent.

I am not sure why most of the pics of the goggs show them clear. Mine are the brown colored ones and not transparent. If I can I'll snap a pic in the morn and send it to you.

i have a lower 2/3 shade 5 and the uper 1/3 the Aure's 296's or what ever they are. good stuff.

yeah they cost money, but they are your eyes we're talking about.

I'm a huge fan of the biker wrap frames. I got mine in Silver and they dont get hot at all.

one thing on the Liberty biker frames - throw away the strap that comes with it! it's a nice idea, but the little clips that pop into the holes on the end of the ear wire wear out too fast and will come loose. I've already dropped my glasses twice because of that, finally replaced with proper crokies.

I think I read every page on the Aura web site when trying to decide which lenses to get. Based on the size of my work....mostly marbles, so small, and the amount of time I am actually on the torch, I went with the 203s.
they seem to be fine for me. I even used them at the glass addiction collab marble assembly session where Kaj Beck was raging a Viper. I'm not saying I would recommend them if you are doing big stuff all the time, but in my situation...small stuff, 2 to 4 hrs at a time, the 203s work great!

Thanks guys, you always give me what I need to make a better decision.

And mike that sucks only clear goggle frames, I am gonna go to Mountain Glass and try some models on, see how they feel.

Well, good news, at least short term, I got my shipment in and the goggles were the grey ones that I had ordered.

I "think" that at some point in the future the grey ones will be discontinued, but right now, I've got them in stock and that's what I'm shipping.

I'll advise here when they are no longer available.

you might want to go shade 5 for the main lense if you get splits. it seems to be almost a standard in boro if your doing fuming and color. at least you wont pay for something you end up feeling isnt enough. if you skip the split, i know auras are about a 100 bucks cheaper for the solid lense, which would be 200-225ish. i dont know for sure how much cheaper phillips is, but the sentiment for aura still runs strong. it seems that there is only a few people that are actually anti aura, but thhere will always be some no matter what you do. its like buying from walmart or mom and pop. you can save if you go to wal mart, but at least if you have a problem you can take it up with mike. and if mike tells you to get fucked at least you heard it from him, cause youll probably never get that far with phillips.

p.s. i know mikes not telling people to get fucked. im just sayin..

I don't believe I've ever told anyone to get fucked (at least I don't think so anyway)...lmao ;)

So... I purchased the AGW-203 shade 3.5 goggle with the brown-tint frames and I love them for the most part, except.

-The light transmition from both under the goggle, and thru the frame itself.

-The nose pad fell off twice while using them in a 5 hour session. Can I glue it or something?

What if anything can be done to alleviate these problems.

The light coming underneath/around the frame is my main issue?

It is basically leaking light into my eyes, no one likes a leak? Plus why spend the money on protection when it leaks. Mike please do not be offended I like the goggles but what can be done or what do you reccomend I try instead, I am looking for input here. I can return them if I want too, to my supplier? The biker frames were too small for my head though.

If I really look down at my work then the light transmission is not as bad, but I am sure my neck will be hurting from that in no time.

Thanks

What about that torque wrap frame or a similar one....are those torque wrap frames any wider than the biker frames?

And do you think the shade 3.5 is good enough for small color and clear work + light fuming?

I have a pair of plastic shade 5 cutting torch glasses $15.00 at your local welding supply house. They fit right over my glasses and work great!

i snagged a good deal on the phillips ride king goggles
they are BLACK framed kinda rubberized? and have foam to give a good seal on the face they are vented as well but they do steam a little they are a shade 3 and im happy with them so far
the lense does pop out too but i think they do on most all the goggle frames at least they arnt clear ,i think most folks pop out the lense and paint them with a plastic freindly paint to cure the clear frame leak

Isn't shade 3 too lite for boro?
I have a pair of shade 3, but I felt like it wasn't enough protection.

Where is The expert I don't wanna void my Warranty, shade 3 is ok for smaller work and light fuming, as I understand it?

I like the 5's better, but you have to peek over the top for some finer work.
Not at the flame, just at the piece.

the light leakage thing is so foreign to me. I just don't have that problem. how far above your torch are you when your working that your not looking directly at the work your doing? I usually sit but when I am standing I definetly have my neck bent looking directly at my work and most pics I have seen of other people standing they are square to their work.
As far as 3.5 vs 5's or 6's. I have what i think are sensitive eyes. My eyes kill me if I only wear didys even for a short time. But only once in a blue moon do I feel an over intensity when using my 3.5's.The only time I remember saying holy shit is when I am heating a quartz rod for fuming. I 'm not the expert or an eye doctor so I hate to give bad advice but I have trouble seeing my work as it is in the lower shades.

Use an acrylic-based paint and paint the frames. The light coming through the frame is only an annoyance, and as far as we've been able to determine, is not hazardous.

As far as the nose pad is concerned, clean it with denatured alcohol, including the pegs on the frame. You may have some skin oils there that are lubricating the pegs causing the nose pad to slip off -- you may also have the band too tight, and you are pull on the pads when you take the frames off.

No. It all depends on how big you work, what colors you use and what type of glass you are working with.

All boro filters that we sell from shade 3.0 up block 99% or better of the hazardous IR, so the only thing to worry about is the visible light flare, and that varies as I mentioned above.

Different people are affected differently, use what works best for you.

I had much patience, thanks for your responses.

I think I have learned to like the goggles already, the frame does sit too far from my face though especially on the bottom.

This allows light/rays to get up under the lenses if I am not looking directly at my work.

My Italian nose might be the problem though?

Any suggestions on that? Beside a nose job.

Mike_Aurelius

In the case with the frames are some different nose pads, I would try those.

Nose jobs are expensive, but a fist is cheaper LOL!! <kidding>

Where do I obtain said nose pads Mike.

Big Jay
06-30-2008, 10:08 AM
shoulda been 2 different nose pads in your box. One will be softer and sit closer to your face and one will be a little stiffer and hold the glasses off your face a bit more.

Yep. Dump everything out of the zipper case. There should be a bottle of lens cleaner, a hex wrench to tighten up the frame (should be finger tight no more, check about once a week), and a small zip lock bag with extra side pads and a different nose pad and an insert to stiffen up the nose pad that comes standard installed on the frame.

Glass Pyro

Very cool, I will have to check it out, I figured they were a spare backup set of pads. But the same.

The anti-fog spray was discovered immediately....also the lens cleaner.

While on the topic, Where to get more de-fog? When I run out, and can you use that cloth to rub the de-fog in.

Thanks guys. I hope the pads do the trick!

Yeah that smaller nose pad was definitely key. Thanks.

But I messed my cool goggle flame sticker set up. :bummed: Is there any way to get a scratch outta the lens? If you get one?

Ryan -- check you PM.

Pyro -- don't scratch the lenses. Deep scratches require replacement, they cannot be repaired.
