Well it was a wacky idea. It is dangerous it is to play with pure oxy. do not try this. it is a concept that might be fun to try with compressed air....

That can't be healthy. I know they have oxygen bars but that could be to much. But iIt does give me the idea of using the frozen liquid dewar to cool air and blow it on you when your working big.

If your clothes or hair get saturated with oxygen, they become highly flamable. :guyonfire Sorry to be a bummer, but I think you should stop that immediately and get some facts before deciding if you should continue. (Just trying to look out for ya)

i read something awhile back where it was argued that spontaneous human combustion was a result of people on medical oxygen and being saturated with oxygen like maestro said.

I use a regular 8 inch clip-on fan..non-combustionable that is.

big box fan under each station, keeps me completely cool when pulling down huge tubes in this 97 degree weather. Its amazing how the fan makes a nice little cold air space between you and the torch.

and its free!@

Yah the pure oxy is probably a major hazard. I just put a fan under my bench faced up at my chest and I haven't broken out in those all out crazy sweats once this summer. Can't believe I didn't do it sooner.

yeah, you really dont want a bunch of un burned oxygen hanging around your face while next to a huge open flame, your just asking for something bad to happen to your face.

isnt that how the astronaughts went poof in a test flight.... to much oxy and velcro went w00sh.....

heh i have a portable ac blowing at me from under the bench....

Seriously bad idea. I mean, REALLY bad. As Maestro stated, if your clothing and hair trap a bunch of oxygen (which they will), they will become much more flammable and the flame they create when ignited will be MUCH hotter. Think of how hot your propane flame is alone. Then turn on the oxy. See the difference? Think how hot a shirt would burn, now add oxy. Can you imagine this scenario?

Just get a fan and put it under your bench. Cheaper, and way less likely to lead to an incident of death or severe disfigurement.

that is a MAJOR fine from osha.blowing any compressed air(even if its just air) is illegal and dangerous.besides the ignition possibilities air can be pushed through the skin into your blood stream and kill you.

If you continue to do this please get a video camera set up so that we can have a video of "what not to do"

might wanna do some reading on breathing high oxy concentrations for extended periods of time too. Its actually scary what it can do.

ok... thanks for the heads up guys. I will stop using the oxy. what about compressed air?

Compressed air should be fine, I'd think. But tdo you really want to listen to a compressor? I'd sugest getting a submesable foot pedal and work in a tub of water.

Major bad idea!!
Ignition Temperature of all materials is established at normal room oxygen concentration. ( 21%). For every 1% increase in concentration, the ignition temp. drops. A lot!!

example: paper has ignition temp of 451F in 21% oxygen environment. increase oxygen over 23% and you drop the ignition temp over 100F! And increase the speed any materials burns.

Every so often we catch a fire at a house that the occupant was on home oxygen for health reasons. they drop a a cig or match on the covers and we get to drag them out and send them to the morgue or burn ward. and put out whats left of the house. They always say" I drooped hot stuff on the blankets before and never had a problem" but not in a oxygen rich environment!!

Cool yourself with a fan!! Don't blow pure oxygen into a enclosed space!
Good info on oxy safety

I was going to add about the flash pont. Even with out o2 i once had my shirt get so hot it just burst in to flames from a tiny tiny pcs of hot glass hitting it.

But if you wanted to see for your self how well o2 will make something burn
stick a lit cigerett in from of the o2 stream and it will burn right up.

i was in a welding shop one time and some dude thought it was a good idea to clean the dust and other crap off his working pants with the oxygen from the torch head....

some random spark came flying over from somebody else working and his pants caught fire... not a big one mind you, just enough for the the person running the shop to throw them out.

i would avoid compress air in general with out a defuser filter, water , particalte matter , and all sorts of line debri can fly threw the line and nail ya and your eyes.... not to mention blowing glass dust randomly

dude get a portable ac unit put it under your bench it will create an area of cool for ya to work in and its always nice to ahve one incase your house one kicks off and the ac guy cant show up for 2 weeks.

i think it would be safer if you put vaseline on your lips and smoked a cigar while doing this.

no really don't! get a small fan.

You know I have dumped liquid oxygen on red grease and it didn't spontaneously ignite.... and I wanted it to. Maybe the liquid cooled it beyond the flash point...?

Still, that said I think this idea belong in the same place as the halogen shop light kiln.

buy one of the box fans that are round, and swivel on a stand. i got mine for 20$. point it straight up your shorts. i guarantee you won't be hot any more!

I laughed my ass off the first time I saw a crotch fan. Now I wouldn't be without one. Still wanting to try this fan system out that uses ice and a cooler. You'd probably need an ice maker to make it practical http://www.boatersworld.com/product/356977074.htm?bct=t13140505

EDIT - just read where people just freeze a bunch of water bottles instead of ice... I might have to go pick one up and give it a try.

halogen shop light kiln.

good call douglas!
I remember that thing. I still feel offended after seeing it and hearing the creator's explanation.
