This is a project you can do, that’s probably the weirdest thing I have seen in glass. Some of you may have done this.

Pull a point

Blow a bubble on the end

When it cools to the point where it just stopped glowing

Put the open end of the point in a cup of water

It will suck up in there and fill it up somewhat, but if you tilt it so some of the water gets down in to the warm bubble it will start going crazy and the water will start spinning really fast, then put it back in the water and it will fill up so fast, you will be scared... flame seal the open end and you have a magnifying glass

Experiment with different ways of doing it, all in all, it's fun as hell.

Is this how a Galileo (sp) therometer is made??? Do you have a picture maybe? This sounds so cool.. Maybe use colored water even??

Yeah, like those weird swan things they used to make in the 70s! I saw a 'phat' green one Homer Hoyt made.
Years back I saw a weird Benjamin Franklin tutorial on how he would make these weird magnifying glasses. When I search for that , though, all I find is a bunch of crap about setting stuff on fire.

its also a way to take a molten core sample , although typically this application is done with quartz . It is used a lot for molten metal core samples .

I tried this Saturday. Fun for a minute.
I had a point made from 25mm and blew a bubble about golf ball size, the open end was approx 4mm and 12" long. I bench cooled this one and went in the house to show my wife your trick. I heated up the bubble with a bic, spinning as usual. When I felt I had wasted enough butane, I put the point into a bottle of water. Just like Cupcake said, it sucked up the water really fast. We both covered our goods while this proceeded to fill up more than halfway. It now resides in the garden and doubles as a self watering bulb that some catalogs sell for as much as $15.
Science is cool. Thanks Cupcake, will this be covered in the video?
