What size do you guys break your rods or tubes down to before putting them on your bench, but after removing them from the case?
Rods?
Tubes?

I fell as if I am having too much wasted glass. I am about to clean it all up now.

It depends on what I'm making.

well in general for punties and such. Or say a 13 mil rod for marble making.
or blow tubes.

You must make some small assed marbles if you're only using 13 mm rod. Ask Parramore about blow tubes I hardly use them.

i just cut my tubes in half but i work right off the tube and add a blow tube for the last one..
i dont make many marbles but when i do i use 19mm or 22..
I usually cut tubes into thirds, there's a mark on my bench to make measuring it easy. I like my punties a little shorter, maybe 1/4 rod.

Thirds and quarters depending on weight.(how well I can balance it and spin)
Blowtubes and punties I usually do in a hurry when I realize I'm almost out but probably around 14-16" to start.
I use 16 mil solid and 26-32mil tube for marbles and pendants but I'm on a national so thats about as big as I can go and keep time reasonable.
18" for rods, blowtubes a little smaller. When I use 1" rod I usually cut off about a foot and then attach a handle to it

I usually just drop them on the concrete floor and use whatever large chunks I get....
never thought of using a carbide scoring tool to cut them into whatever length would be most convenient for me in my individual situation.
good call everyone!

I flame cut my tubing in half and snip my rod and blowtube into fourths or fifths, depending on what I'm using it for. I bug out on peeps who work straight off the tube- yall using a swivel or do you just put your mouth right on that big ol' hole? I'm curious about Roger's lecture on "the evil of pulling points." Haven't done THAT in a long time, though it was the way I was taught...

I work right off the 5 foot tube/ rod.. It eliminates waste, raw glass is so expensive compared to the retail price we get so you have to cut costs wherever possible.

^^^^ what he said unless I am raking then I just break those in halves. Same with tubes either quarters or thirds depending on what I am making and the tube diameter.
oh and all my really short pieces of rod I just gather up and once every few weeks and weld them together for tearing holes or holding a short piece of color.

alright. I was just wondering, cause my instinct is to break down the cases of rods I got and stick them in jars on my work bench. I dunno?

4 foot rods I cut into 3rds, but big stuff like 1" I usually cut into halves. It's heavier, but it gives you more marbles off the rod before you start BBQ-ing your fingers from radiant heat.
Tubing, usually in half.
