i wouldn't call this a "breakthrough" what i would call it is "freaking common sense". for around $1,500 you can go to home depot and buy everything but the solar panel to make your own O2 and H bottling center. hell it's cheaper if you buy used or scrapped parts.

this has been my soapbox issues for i don't know how long. I can't believe it takes somebody from MIT to say this for people to pay attention... it's something i'm sure we all learned in 7th grade science class.

also:

inspired by the trees? come on dude... don't be such a freaking hippy.

Saw this yesterday....

It's interesting, but AlGalCo as already doing something similar with catalysts.

Still, he's not claiming it's free energy, just very efficient storage of "essentially" free energy. I don't think anyone gonna be getting a sun bill in the mail, but in terms of thermodynamics, even the sun's energy isn't "free".

neat idea, something to think about.

large corporations might find something like this useful for storing energy off-peak and using it during the day also.

The only problem I see is the storage issue and moving the gas from storage to a usable container. Once again, energy enters into the equation. I don't think even sunlight (via solar cells) can provide enough amperage to power a compressor to shove the gases into a storage tank...

i'm pretty sure you'd need an entire set of cells (the newer super dense ones) to run the compressor. and that would only last for a short while

Are you then implying that this sun bill I got in the mail is a fraud? Because, it's like 60 bucks.
