So this lady contacted me about some glassblowing equipment of her grandfathers that she wants to sell. I really don't know what to value it at but am interested in purchasing it possibly. Bethlehem torch by the way. Just wanted to see what you guys thought as far as its value. She is coming by this week and I will try out the torch but assuming that its in good condition and all. The pics are not that helpful but its all she had

It’s very difficult to put a value on it, because something is only worth what people are willing to pay for it.

If you are looking to sell it, eBay would be the best option to get the highest price.

Just my .02

Not looking to sell, looking to buy. What would you all pay for it given what you can tell about it?

I'd say a few hundred, tops. I doubt you'll use that ribbon buner thing, maybe pass on that or resell. Was her GF making vacuum tubes?

At first glance, I see a National 3a/b and a set of folding rollers.

The best thing in that kit is the hand torch it is a beth surface mix torch you will love it. The graphite's are probably the only other thing that will be useful

This kit was sold by Bethlehem

Bear

PS start at $75 and work your way up

shoot a offer at 150 and work from there the adjustable rollers could bring in close to a hundo on the right e-gay day. I am with the rest on the value being 250 or more but its old equipment and those 75-150 dollar offers are pawn shop numbers.
I think I would shell out up yo 250 on it myself, Just because I don't need it but could pic thru and sell the rest and get mines for free.

for me a fair estimate would be
100 for the bench burner
100 for the lathe ribbin
100 for the hand torch (it is one of the best surface mix torchs i have used...if it is that)
hand tools probably around 100
and rollers 50 bucks

honestly around 500 bucks is fair consitering i cant see what else is in there but it seams fair to me negoitate as needed. just remeber your not going to be able to sell much of that except for historacal pieces.......

Nice, Bear is right, the beth hand torches are great, I have one and love it! The last pic looks like there is a bench burner in it too on the far right. Start low and work your way up on price, no shame in a low ball offer it they take it!

Only problem with a low-ball offer is that you would either offend her, or she'd really think you were an asshole and end up taking it to some other schmo who might give her more.

You could use the tactic of "if these were new, they could be worth..., but since they haven't been used in a while, and you really don't know if they still work well, then maybe .... would be more in line." and also "How much were you hoping you could get for them?" She might just pop up with "oh a hundred or so" and you could give her say, $125 and she'd think it was the bomb.

Be nice and maybe she'll play nice too.

UmaJulz You haven't done much bartering have you. I have received lots of "My grandfater's glass stuff" most of the wives or grand kids only want to sell it to someone who can use the stuff or to get rid of it for a move. Since it is very hard to find a GB they are really glad to find someone.

You have to gauge the buy when you arrive at the house and talk to the seller. If there is crying involved maybe offer a little more.

The price when this was sold in 1954 was not much more then $110 at the most and I don't think it has gained in price since then. Maybe the antique road show would estimate it a $5,000 if all the parts where their but alas one of the mouth pieces is missing from the bag now it's only worth $75.

don't get me wrong I'm just having fun :D

Bear

jr23 I have the rollers in the pic if you are going to AGI I will sell them to you.

bear, if they're in good shape I'll take 'em, bring 'em with you if you can.

Also, I would offer $100 for the kit - some money for whoever has it to get rid of, and no huge loss if nothing works.

I cant do agi its my busy time I am double booked with offers for triple pay and no time!

I think that is an east german lampworking torch, because of the side mount looks like the torch Kurt Wallstab used?

If so it's bad ass for working soft glass because it will have 3 inputs, 1 O2, 1, Propane/Ngas, 1 air for a soft flame.

Not so good for boro though.

I have one and they are awesome

Actually Bear, I have done a lot of bartering. :D There are some parts of the world economy that thrive on barter; I've lived there and done quite well, thank you.

I was just throwing out a softer attitude for the guy to start with- the numbers are irrelevant, as I obviously have no knowledge or experience with this equipment. But I have had to sell my Dad's stuff, and I have seen a lifetime's worth of very good tools and machinery go for a pitiful amount of money. It's painful, so I was just trying to suggest a different approach than digging in the knife and twisting for all it's worth (though it sounds like it probably isn't worth much).

Be kind, yet shrewd- she may have been watching Antiques Roadshow a little too long and have 'museum pieces' stuck in her head.

did this deal go thru any body with used rollers for me.
