im trying to stay optimistic but its getting scary. Airgas just raised all they're prices here and it has topped 120$ for an s tank + rental fees. have prices gone crazy on the mainland as well?
Man that sucks I pay $100 for a dewar and 30gal propane delivered.
...hey jup. im paying the same and i dont want to tell you how much cause it would bum you out. can you buy a concentrator or something?

I hope they didn't jack up the price here in Florida. I usually pay $35 for a k tank refill which I thought was ridiculous already considering I get about 16 hours of burn time out of that. I'll find out tomorrow I guess........

hey jupiter, ive thought about a progen concentrator but for what i pay it wouldnt pay itself off for ten years. in your case i think it would be well worth it to invest in a progen. (i think thats what they are called.)

That sucks!!!!
I haven't been down there in a month so...
I have to pick up my tanks since they don't deliver to a residential area. The last time, I picked up 2 empty tanks :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: I had the VP of AirGas on the phone and gave him more than a piece of my mind!!! He knows better than to mess with me, esp. when I have a major case of PMS!!! LOL!!!

their raising there gas prices and rental fees across the board company wide. i think o2 is supposed to go up by about 15% might be different in special markets like hawaii ect. alot of their gases are going up by 35% or more. my guys guve me a good deal im still paying just 12 and change for a 337cu. they also know i buy alot of gas and am willing to switch to a generator if prices go up to much. i get around 5 tanks a week at least on my account. man i wish my tanks gave me 16 hrs of burntime im lucky to get 8 lol. good luck jup. might be time to buy your own o2 setup. peace brett
...youd be way better off to spend 5k on an 02 setup and pay $120.00 a month toward a payment for the thing.
Sucks man, my places raised prices too but just by a bit.
Liquid 50 gal, is 99. 17.50 delivery and 50 a month rental.
High pressure 251, 22 dollars and 5 bucks a month rental.

luckily i convinced them to geive a better dicount because im using so much. they gave me 30% off now but its still way to much.
i live in a subdivision so any oxy con./gen. that requires an air compressor is not going to work. Im not confident enough in the other reconditioned units.
airgas told me theyre base price went up 15% and hazmat, delivery, fuel surcharge... prices went up as well. im paying 12$ for hazmat fees...BS.
where do you live phab that youre paying as much?

most air compressors you can get to sound less offensive then an air conditioner.... if you put in a little work.... i know several places that run large compressors with in small very stricked noise level areas......
seriously your oxy prices are messed up....

I figured oxy prices would be getting hiked up soon due to fuel hike/ crashing economy. Thanks GWB. Thanks NWO. Fuck the money, get a generator. Oh and fuck income taxes too, they're unconstitutional. (no really, read on it) Oh, BTW if you read my thread on the Hurricane, I had to send it back to UO, it had problems, probly got knocked around in shipping:bangHead: Jack confirmed the thing was only putting out 5psi and wasnt happy with the purity so he's even re-pouring the sieve bed for me. I should have it back next week and will update my review on the machine then.

I disagree. We have a 7hp two stage compressor and I here it and feel it across 11 acres. I could not run that one or the 10hp screw compressor in town without bothering the neighbors. Be careful about running your compressor in a insulated box especially if it's an oil less job. They will run hot and shorten it's life.

...hey jup. i was saying i didnt want to tell you how much i paid cuz it would bum you out. im in seattle. i was paying 11 out the door for k tanks but now theyre $15.00. you might ask wonka about the screw type compressors theyre supposed to be pretty quiet. instead of pumping for air theres a screw apparatus that makes air as it screws down. im pretty sure he would know.

...wow, so the screw compressors are loud? i did some searching on compressors a while back and they "claim" there are noiseless screw compressors used in medical settings. now that i think of it ive heard some pretty quiet electric belt driven compressors in auto garages and stuff.
just thinking of how much loot jupiter could save if theyre charging that much on the islands.

i still think its worth whatever you pay for it. (thats if you have the money.) cause in your case it will pay it self off in five years. also, you could fill k tanks and slang em....

The screw compressors are quiet. But you still here a rumble. Not to mention most screw compressors cost big bucks.
Dual stage compressors that most garages would have You wouldn't notice because of all the background noise but at night when it kicks on you will. I'm not saying you can't get away with it but if you have neighbors they will here it. The larger the compressor the more soothing the sound. Oil less compressors will make you go deaf and guaranteed to annoy the neighbors. Make sure it's belt drive two stage and has a large storage tank and you will be fine. (I hope)

I want to switch from concentrators to tanked so I called my local supplier who was just bought out by Airgas. The guy tells me $70 for 300lb oxy tank. I think my jaw hit the floor. A couple years ago I was paying $10 for a refill and a couple dollars for delivery. Their deliver charge is now $52
I told him that I have a friend who is only payiing $16/fill up. He hemmed and hawed and reduced the price to $20/fill. $70 was ther walk-in price. I need something that will fire up he outer ring of my torch and concentrators won't do it. $10 to $70 is a 700% markup - nothing has gone up that much.

...yeah nice that we all pay twice for fuel increases. once to fill up our own cars and once again to pay for the distribution of widgets. theres a new alignment in the works. keeps the workforce hungry.

I hear you Jup. I'm paying just about 600 bucks for a liquid tank now. It's a lot, but it's way better then the price I was paying for compressed tanks, and I get way way more work out of it for the moneys worth...

Praxair is still best round here, my buddy filled me a Ktank at A&R and it was like 35$ with his welder discount, so 40$ for me after i pay for his gas, tehn yesterday he brought my T and nother K from Praxair and was only 25$ for the fills so i gave him 60$ for both ,,
100$ for 3 tanks I might have to start lookin at the liquid, only bad thing is that i wont even burn a tank a week so, wonder if it will be worth it..

Aigas sent us a letter last month saying all there prices on most of the gases they sell where on the rise because of overseas demands. The price went up here at the begining of August also but I still only pay 14.00 plus a hazmat for a 300 k tank.

Those are some crazy prices, cant you all look around for a deal? (other than those on the islands)
I mean my oxy guys told me standard walk in price on a 251 is around $75 a fill. But The first time I called in asking prices they told me 17$ (around $20 with hazmat) and thats where it still is a over year later.
Propane was 10 and now its like 11.95 for a bbq tank.
Are delivery charges a big part of your increase?
Ben Burton Glass
08-09-2008, 01:44 PM
Nope. those prices are how they are because there's only two sources for O2 on the island (O'ahu at least, I'm not sure about Maui, where Jup is) and both know that the other isn't gonna budge on the price that much...
It's pretty much a monopoly, but technically it's not because there are 2 companies.
Delivery to me is like $30 so it doesn't play a big factor in the pricing...
A 5 gallon bbq tank for propane runs about $20-$21 bucks a fill.
Like I said above, it's the price we pay to live where we do... I try not to get to angry/frustrated anymore, cause it does no good but ruin my day. That means I just need to work harder to produce better/higher quality work and make more money in doing so.

I pick up my own, won't pay delivery chgs, no way. But at $9.75 for a K (plus Hazmat) I am a happy camper. No increase from Airgas for me, but I think they consider us all a collective, and give us a better rate.
I can certainly thank Hass for hooking me up- he's the man in my book.

Careful with Praxair, their known for suckin you in and raising prices, and the Praxair here puts on average 400-500 lbs less in each K tank, starts adding up fast.
Liquid is perishable, if you don't use at least a few k tanks a week and it's warm at all, most of your oxy will blow off.
Airgas will rip you off if you let them, I just haggle them to death. I pay 19.19 for a k. and .25 a day rent per tank. I'm working on getting a better deal leasing the tanks. All that said I go through 4 to 5 k tanks a week, makes it easier to haggle if you can say I go through 20 tanks a month.

If your going thru 4 or 5 k tanks a week at 19.19 you should think about switching to liquid. You should be able to buy the equivilent of about 18 k tanks for 100 bucks. That should save you at least a couple hundred a month or 2,400 a year.

Agreed! I was going through 4-5 tanks a week at around 55-70 bucks a piece, and it was EATING holes in my wallet. so $600 for a liquid tank (which lasts about a month) isn't so bad in comparison. Now I live by the liquid tanks! One tank, no hassle of picking up/dropping off or waitting for a delivery, as well as not having to change the regs everytime a tank ran out is just way way better! I get to work way more, and I'm paying less then I was, so it definitely qualifies as a better situation...

i would switch to liquid too but once again it comes down to living in a subdivision. There is no way my neighbors(nice people they are) wouldnt call the community association if i was filling a liquid tank in the carport. I went through 8 tanks last month at about 85 each.

When I started in 2003 I was paying around $30 a K tank from praxair and only using 3-5 a month (a premix minor IS good for something)! After a year or two it was about $37. About 2 years ago Jes Durfee told me about a place in town that would fill them for $18. I only owned one tank and leased one from Praxair so when the guys at Praxair saw me filling one tank from them with another tank in the car from this other company they were willing to negotiate.
Since then, even when company wide increases happen my guys always bring it back to $18. With Hazmat it's about $22. I now have 3 tanks that I go through a week and drive to praxair to fill. Once I'm done with college I may consider liquid but I'm only using enough to justify it for the 3 months of summer and Praxair already said they won't deliver to my house.
Bottom line, good relationships with your oxy guys can pay off. Don't give them too much grief. They work for corporations and can only do so much to help us.

You can still find a cheap trailer devoted to liquid oxy. Never take it off the trailer pull it to shop for filling then park next to the garage for use. You could even build some side walls on the trailer and no one would ever need to know.
BTW: I don't think there are any companies that fill your dewar off site. The trucks are designed to dump it in a bulk silo then it's pumped into the dewar at the welding shop.

Probably not this month Jupiter, but I'd definitely like to get out there and melt some glass!! If you fly over for a couple days you can crash on the couch and we can work plenty... Might be enough to cover expenses, might not... I think I saw inter-island tickets for about 150.00 last time I checked...

That's a great idea! I've been thinking of buying an enclosed trailer to use for art shows anyway!
...the trailers a good idea but what about when it vents?
somewhere
08-10-2008, 04:59 PM
A liquid tank full weighs about 800lbs. I don't think venting would be a problem but I don't want to give bad advise. I would make sure the trailer can vent or you can run a large tube from the blow off vent and drill a hole in the floor or wall for it to vent thru.
barefoot stash
08-12-2008, 12:39 PM
The thing I would be worried about with the closed trailer would be the heat building up causing more venting. Not an necessarily an explosion danger, but a waste of liquid all the same. I have enough of an issue with my tank in the open. The open trailer I use for the studio has a high bar that I can easily strap the tank to. I usually get my tanks delivered however I've made the trip to the welding shop on more than one occasion since my liquid seems to like to run out on Fridays especially when I have a crank session planned for the weekend:)

no room for a trailer neither. not sure how it works elsewhere but on maui they bring a sketchy looking van out to your place and fill it onsite. makes a whole lot of noise and just generally doesnt look like something safe. im sure its fine but my neighbors would freak.
I think im basically screwed. tourists are down by 25% and costs are up. am I going to have to get a real job? fuck that!
I really need for one of those refurbished medical oxy gen. to work for my setup. I just dont feel that comfortable in investing yet as everyone seems to have a different story about how good they work.
Im running a phantom but almost never turn the outer fire on (i crack one of the outer oxy to tighten up the flame). i dont do any blown work so i dont need a large bushy flame, just a tight small one. Anyone work similar with a oxy gen like that?

i have used some referb medical ones... there ok , 1 will run a national ox3 perfect and run a 13 hole workably.... minor is sad .... on 2 with a surge tank i can work a minor fairly well nothing huge but workable .... the lynx is just pathic
you really need a 15lpm machine+ a surge tank to run a lynx i think even 20lpm i think the lynx could keep up ... for the full phantom your looking at some cash....but your already looking at 2gs.....
if you could get some industrail space and a few other blowers in the same set up you could get your oxy generator with compressor running and a recompressor like a haskle pump and buy a few cylenders and peal ya off a couple here and there and toat it back to your shop probably at most with equipment would be 30 bucks a tank with a pay off in a couple years that way.....
just an idea
