Sigma macro lenses are good and inexpensive.
There's a 60mm (?) and a 105mm. I have the smaller and it's great for closeups of marbles, shooting at a foot away with an fstop of 32 and a remote. I forget what I paid but I wanna say 120ish .. the 105mm is like 200-250. If you're gonna take pics of bigger pieces I'd go w/ the 105 =)
have fun good luck
Funny that you post this. I just bought a D60 with the 18-55 nikor vr lens and the 55-200 nikon vr. So Ill let you know if either of those is good when it comes in.
How much did you get the D80 for?

I've got a D200 with a Nikon 105mm macro lens. Here's a couple of minimally-retouched (probably an Unsharp Mask and a white balance tweak, it's been awhile) pics. If your browser shrinks it, download it and load it in your app of choice.
The lighting was a pair of 3200K Sylvania 250W lights plus a diffused Nikon SB-800 Speedlight mounted on the body.

While it's oriented toward miniature painters instead of glass, this thread is one of the best I've seen on macro photography:

Have you actually tried camera/lens and seen what camera/lens can do before sinking more $$$$ in more lenses you may not need.....

Look into sigma lenses or the filters that screw on front that come in a pack of 1x, 2x, 3x, and 4x. They take an all around lens used for portraits and make it into a good macro. You could also get a fish eye, that comes with a macro lens also, but then thats another 300 bucks.

I'm sorry but you were NOT exactly clear you did not yet possess camera and also were looking for a lens for a body only....
I usually only consider cameras that comes WITH lenses... So it was my bad.
I believe the D80 is also available as a kit with a 18 to 55 and a 55 to 200 lens as a kit.... I would consider the NIKOR 18 to 55mm lens... IF you GOOGLE "NIKON D80" you will have several hundred options for bodies, lenses and pricing.
Usually the NIKOR lenses that come with Nikon cameras are superior to inexpensive after market lenses...Putting a cheap lens on expensive camera body is usually a step backwards....

Check out: http://www.popphoto.com/cameralenses/ as they do a lot of lens tests and reviews. Hope this helps
Get the 18-55 Nikor VR lens for now, im sure you will want to use the camera for other pics too not just glass. If that doesnt satisfy your glass needs then look into other options.

I have the non-VR version of the Nikon 18-55 and love it.
I also have the Nikon 18-200 VR version that I use as my walkaround lens. Great lens as well.
Thats good to hear, it was between a kit with the 18-55 vr and 55-200, or a kit with just the 18-200 vr lens for 200 more. I got the one with two lenses hopefully a bit more versatility.

I use a D200 with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8. The lens rocks, especially for $115. Seems like any good Nikkor zoom lens is $700+, so I don't mind the fixed focal length. It's way better than the 18-70mm kit lens!
I just got to use a photographer friend's D300 yesterday with Pro Photo strobes. Fun stuff, but the strobe thing had a steep learning curve.... I got a few decent shots though.
BTW, my photographer friend says to stay away from Sigma and most Tamron lenses.
