A safe and easy way to purify your frit!

I was having problems with weird spots in my frit. I heard that the frit grinders often leave small pieces of metal in the ground glass. I had a bunch of old hard drive magnets lying around, so I decided to put one in each frit container. I have been amazed a how much improvement I have seen. The surprising thing is that it also grabs some of the chunks of glass. I am not sure if those little pieces have bits of the grinder wedged in them or what, but all of my colors have improved, and I get less cracking!

Look for small, powerful magnets. Many different varieties are available, try ebay. I suggest that you put it in a small (1” x 1”) ziplock, this will help you get all of the metal bits off.

I just got a bottle of the new Northstar fine star white, and I got a LOT of little metal bits.

I have used a coffee grinder from BigLots ($5) for years. As they wear out the blade just replace them (another $5). you absolutely have to use a magnet for this technique, but it works well.

You can also buy sorting / grading screens from both ceramics suppliers and prospecting suppliers to sort your new frit, or you can buy machine cloth from places like McMaster-Carr ( http://www.mcmaster.com )

I do the whole process dry, outdoors, back to the breeze.


If you need LOTS of frit, you can mount a garbage disposal on top of a 5 gal. bucket and run a hose into it, and the frit just falls out the bottom. As the bucket starts to overflow with water (have a few holes in the bucket about half way down) the talc and silt fine powders will start to wash out leaving frit below. You can oven dry the frit around 300 degrees and it's ready to use after a good magneting to remove any metal bits from the garbae disposer blades.

You can also get a hold of Steinert(the ppl who do the molds) and they make some nice frit crushers that are used by hitting the thing with a hammer. Its like a giant dumbell weight that fits snugly into a metal cylinder. You put the colored rod in the cylinder and then put the weight on top of it. Smack it with the hammer and Blammo youve got frit. That tech is also lots of fun if you do it with left over pieces of cane.
Definitely use this one directly in front of your ventilation

Yeah I mgiht need to try the coffee grinder.

I have used the dumbell one from steinert, It works, but I would like to make more firt like 1/4 - 1 pound at a time and the dumbell frit crusher is to small. Also when I used it the snug fit of the dumbell and cylinder cause air to sqeeze out fast fill of glass dust.

Does anybody if there is another option for a glass crusher like the one ek miller company made?
