I am a newbie and I haven't gotten into the hot glass art yet but, I have been following this awsome group and I had an idea. I haven't made anything obviously but, I thought many of you could make glass whistles. I don't know if any of you are familiar with clay whistles but I know from what I have seen here that you guys could make some real awsome ones!!! If you don't know what one is there is a book "Clay Whistles...the Voice of Clay" that shows you how to make them in clay to give you an idea. This is a website with some pics and info. http://www.whistlepress.com/ They look like the pipe making a lot of you already do so I bet you guys could make some that really rock. I hope nobody finds this idea stupid. I am a newbie that can't make them for myself and I thought even though I haven't made anything yet that I could at least contribute to this groups disscussions to make up for the awsome stuff I get from this group. I want to thank all of you talented people for the art and work that you do...... It is what makes life fun and worth living. Keep up the great work. I hope someone tries this. I can't wait to see what will be born from your artistic minds and talent......

Thats funny...last weekend I saw one of those clay whistles and was planning on trying one. I just wasnt sure of the hole placement and shape. One of these days Ill try and post the results. Anyone else try making one of these before?

One time I made a onie that whistled like a champ, but had no idea why that one did and the rest didnt.??

Sounds great!! I have made one in clay from the book I mentioned and it worked first try but, of couse clay isn't anywhere near or as complicated as glass. The hole will of course be the hardest part to figure out and I imagine not getting any stress cracks or such around the hole will be the trick. I think it would be a fun project. They can be made to look like so many diffrent things and can have multiple holes to change the pitch of the sound. I think they would really sound good made from glass. Run with it..... I can't wait to see pics. Maybe someone has already had this idea and has made some. If so I hope to see some pics.....

glass ocarinas would be badass, but as some people here have found (when trying to make flutes, i believe) getting the holes right to give proper notes is the hard part.

It's a complex thing to tune a scale to a seven hole 8-note system on a major or minor scale. I believe it is the length of the tube measured with a micrometer multiply'd by .995 for a half step. The diameter of the whole plays a big part too... but that info escapes me now... but hey, this was about whistles. Damn it!

SOMEBODY out there makes (or at lest made?) glass occarinas. I saw a pic of one on a Glass Alchemy (or was it Northstar?) flyer at a place a taught at not too long ago... Pretty cool.

The one I made with clay and from the book I mentioned had only the one hole just like a whistle a coach would have. It was the size of the whistles compartment that determined the sound it made. The book says to make the compartment bigger for a deeper sound and smaller for a higher pitch. From all the pipes I have seen here you could make one that looked like it was some alien thing with wild designs and colors. That would be wild!! I want to see one so bad I could almost hear and see it now..........

when i make immaculate bubblers (about half the ones I make) I have noticed that they often whistle when you blow into them. Don't know about the okarinas; but for a traditional flute I can tell you that the tube needs to be 30x longer that the inner diameter of the tube.

Check this out! Gregory Sheyers made this flute at the Eugene Glass School Flame Off last month. It looked and sounded great and won the People's Choice Award.

That is some wild stuff. I looks just like a branch. :lol
If that is possible the whistles must be. I have to get my shit together (translated save up some coin) and start learning and burning.
Thanks for the pic!!
