my oxy supplier said I could buy my own dewar and put it into the exchange system so I do have to pay rent anymore. I've seen some dewars for sale but they are all older sales but most were much less then $1,000. He told me I could buy one through him for $2400. Thats way out of my range.
So if you own your own , where did you get it and how much did you pay for it. Anyone know of one for sale anywhere in Florida or even Georgia? He did not see to care what shape it was in only that it was truely customer owned.

I've heard of several oxy companies telling customers that they couldn't buy their own dewars but they were probably just trying to keep them leasing. I don't know how much you're paying for a lease but they were around $400/year in NC the last time I checked. I've also heard that you have costly inspections and requirements to meet if you purchase rather than lease.

Leasing is almost a bit like an insurance policy because the owner of the tank would be liable instead of you in the event of some very unlikely catastrophe that injured someone or damaged property. I've heard of a few Californians on here talk about what would happen to their shop in the event of an earthquake and it's pretty scary.

Personally I would just lease the thing or try to save up for a good generator.

I paid $1500 for a 180L and I can get 140 and 160's for $1000.

Talk to the guys on the dock at the welding places, they know the hook ups.

Doug you are right. The first liquid tank I bought was from Air-Gas and i paid $800 the tank was used but it was still working just fine. Call all the o2 suppliers around your area and ask ti see if they have any used ones they would sell for cheap.

Just stay away from the plain steel ones look for stainless and check the dates on it. Some tanks cost more to re certify then others.

yeah he said it had to be stainless. If I buy a tank it doesn't stay with me it just gets exchange. He said he didn't care if it was in bad shape or if it had any type of inspections that they would fix anything needed once it was in thier system.
I think our lease is $70 a month + tax so if I can break even in about a year or so its well worth it. Plus our oxy company could sure use another dewar in thier system.

At $1500 I'm looking at 3 years @ $500/year to break even. Once my tank needs to be checked I'll put it in rotation, but it's it's pretty much brand new and the 180L tanks are a rare commodity around here.

Eventually I'll have a shop with micro bulk storage (800L or so) and have a delivery once a month. When I have an excuse to spend $50,000 on a tank that's what I'm gonna do. Sometimes they come up at auction for like $10,000.

-- Side note: Hey Tom, that would be sweet, a 1500L tank at Wonka World, filled up once a year..... Keep your eyes open, if I find one here cheap I'll let you know.

How long can those bulk units hold liquid? Do they suffer the same venting problems that dewars do? I saw one for sale somewhere , not sure if it was an oxy place going out of business or what but it was massive. If I remember correctly I think it was 25k or 30k though. Definetly not even a remote possibility for me but it did get me curious. At that price wouldn't 2 or 3 pro 8's linked be a better option? Or even 1 pro 8 hooked to a recompressor and a massive high pressure storage tank?
We've gotten so many bad dewars this year its getting old. We had one vent its in entire contents in 24 hours and the one we got this month lasted a whole 5 days. With the first couple bad ones we had the oxy company was cool about taking care of it now I think they are sick of hearing from us. Somehow they don't seem to understand glass blowers can't take a week off.

That sounds fair. My oxy co. charges more to fill customer owned tanks. I never understood why that is but sure enough everyone one in this town does.
