this was a first for me. seeing all of ram's work lately has inspired me to play around with as many techniques as i can find time to. the full size female figure on the front of glassline is amazing and got me wishing i had some real skills. one day......

i have alot to learn but this is a great project to get my welding skills a little more up to snuff.

this one is 17" tall and has to go into the kiln on its side. i took the pics in case it doesnt make it out alive.

that is my first torso attempt as well. i tried to include arms and legs but they looked crazy so i decided to simplify my first attempt.

the top is all 4 mil and the base is 5 mil.

i am going to include color in the next attempt. i love melting shit.

happy holidays to all , jay

thats a damn good 1st try,, i made some glass knuckles a few weeks ago just tryin it out and, was a lot harder than it looked, came out pretty crappy.

so are you getting a whole section tacked in, then going back and smothing the welds, thats the only way i could do it without wonkin it all out, and it still wonked a lot heheh..

nice fig too..

thanks for the positive words crip. i can relate to it being alot harder than it looks mentality.

i found that it was easier to start with a 3 piece weld or connection than to try and build the whole piece and come back later to reweld completely.

when i tried to spot weld a whole row i found that many of the joints would crack when i came back for the remelt. (rough on my nerves having it pop and crack)

basically i make a triangle to start, then melt it in. the three pieces of the triangle help to support the shape and keep it from drooping when i melt the joints in.
once i have a starting point , i add 2 more piece, an upright and a cross piece to connect to the original triangle. continue on until you have completed the first row of your circle, square, or whatever shape your piece is going to be.

after each new connection, i go back and melt in the two new joints, then go on to the next set.

mine got a little wonky in the first few rows but i think with better layout and starting welds that i can get a smoth flowing shape.

if it is wonky in the start then i suggest you start ove as it is very hard to fix the shape once it goes out.

i am going to start a new one today and i hope to make more detail and more complex figure. we shall see.

p.s. this one cracked in the shoulder area before i got it in the kiln. i need to try and spot heat the crack to fix or get rid of her and start over.

my kiln isnt tall enough inside to stand the piece up either so i am not sure what to expect when it comes out as far as standing/stability.

i am off to melt something. later good people of the glass world.

here are a few pics of the vessel after a touch up.
as i said the torso craked before i got it in the kiln so i decided to play around a little and see what i could do to the final look.

since it was my first torso i just was happy to have the shape of a woman but the arms and the leg tips looked funny ending at a point so i flattened them out while i was fixing the crack in the body. (which i was happy to get back solid with no real problems).

also i did not like the base whatsoever so i was either gonna start over or play around with the one i had until i liked what i saw. i chose the later and just removed a few center bars and turned them into arrow heads. i think it looks 100% better and i plan to use that design on my next one.
also i added some pointed tips to the vessel to tie in with the base and i must say that i am very happy for the first one.

i got a lucio bubacco video set for x-mas and i am now in shock and awe. his work is so incredible to see made. lots of inspiration in the vids and it shows the pieces from start to finish which is a real bonus for me since this is my school. highly recomended....

after watching the vids several times i went out and started practicing on the female body instead of just a torso and this is my first two attempt using the anatomy by numbers thing that lucio preaches in his vids.

they are not very big but they were alot of work to do. i loved every second of it and i am planning on using these two to be my center piece for my next two weaved vessels.

i had to skip alot of detail in the face to preserve the shape and flow but i think it will come together with more and more detail as i continue to make em.

still have to make hands and i did do one foot which was not easy at all. i took pics now in case i break them when i try to finish. i hope not but stranger shit has happened.

(my pics suck because i had to handhold the camera and use a flash. my wife has my tripod in her car)

hope every one had a great x-mas and be safe and happy doing the new years thing.

i could say a lot about myself, along those same lines...

look at how well the boob coffee cup did...

i did a shit load of those, when i did ceramics...

here are few new women that i made in the last few days. they are about 8 inches tall and the first two are made from double ap and carmel on the last one.

they are starting to come together nicely i think. it is so important to take the time to get the details and proprtions right in each area before going to the next one.

still a hard concept for me to grasp when working with a molten material... practice, practice, practice..... you know the story.

i love making the human form and as you all know by now i have a thing for big tits. so i guess all my women are gonna be well endowed..

i am mounting one of them to a turned pink ivory wood goblet top with african ebony trim. i dont know if the base will be wood or glass yet? ill post pics when i get it done.

well i am off to make sawdust today (bowl to turn and sand). later, jay

i took a pic with my two new friends hanging around on the piece. i see potential for sure. it always amazes me what a few things here and there can do for the look of something. sometimes it opens new doors and presents an entirely different look.

i am going to make a more spiderweb looking vessel and then add a few 8 legged buddies here and there.

i have been working on another weaved piece and it is taking awhile but its coming along.

here are a few pics of the latest weaved vessel i am working on. it is about 9 inches around and 6 tall so far. it is starting to get heavy and i am worried i am going to snap the connection at the punty soon.

i am not sure how much taller i am going to go(make a vase) or if i am going to leave it as is and use it as a bowl?

so far i have use 35 feet of 5 mil.

tons of welds on this one. i may sandblast it. i have never used a blaster before, what is the smallest diameter rod you can safely blast to a satin finish?

i couldnt resist putting the spider in.

your weaved vessels are getting really nice. personally i love the spider because i feel like it links back to your other wood vessels that had a spider web effect. i still dont know how to organically merge the two mediums but im sure that when u do it will be awesome. im excited to see what u come up with!
and i would also like to know how thin a piece can be and still be blasted, and with what grit?
maybe u could etch it although i hear it doesnt work as well on boro.

yeah crip it really has almost 7 full 5'rods in it. there are shitloads of welds and i had planned to go about twice the size but was shocked at the time it took to get this far and the amount of material it has taken. seems like the glass just evaporates or doesnt go anywhere near as far once worked as it seems it should.

i just got a chance to borrow a sandblaster for the first time and i am for sure getting one.

i blasted this piece and it looks so much better. however it did show me 3 welds that had cracked that i could not find until it was blasted. i am gonna try and fix the cracks and reblast it so i can mount it on a girl i just completed and also blasted.

i dont have time to take pics now but will get them later.

have a good day fellow melters of the sand.

That basket looks even better blasted IMHO. About how much does it weigh? Even at 5 mm, that's a lot of glass.

thanks marina, i like the blasted version alot myself. amzing how just changing the finish from gloss to satin can give a piece a whole new look.

just guessing but i would say the piece is getting close to 2 pounds.

i was starting to worry about the connection on the main punty but i think for my next one i will take the punty off and just hold by hand until i get too big to hold, then swith over to a hand torch and keep the piece on the bench.

i just bought a smith little torch and cant wait to try it out on the really tight areas. i am sure it will allow much more complex shapes to be welded without fear of the flame hitting other parts and cracking them.

i tried one in 3 mil rod and it seems like it ran out too thin at the joints for my comfort. i suppose it would be alright for really small stuff but that is it.

now the 5 mil seems like it could withstand alot more stress and weight and i like the way the glass flows when i am welding the joints. no distinct thin spots to worry about.
